Nietzsche's Argument Against Historical Education
Friedrich Nietzsche argues that our current historical education is destroying our lives. Nietzsche believes that he must “protest against the historical education of modern youth” and that when he does protest he requires all new youth must “learn to live and use history only in service of the life they have learned to live” He believes that education in the early stages, is just a matter of teaching a child how to see the value of a certain group of things. This is done by teaching them the history of the world they live in. In Nietzsche’s world, he believes it’s all lies and is not granting the children a chance to set their own goals. He did not care so much about the truth; he just wanted you to act and get out there and do it. Not stand behind a book all day and learn about what happened in the past but to begin their future. Etienne Gilson would have to agree. Gilson believes in a Christian education revolving around the belief and loving of God. But Gilson does believe in following Christian faith which has been around for thousands of years and it should never be changed but only added too. Gilson knows there is a problem with the current modern world, between the choices of “enforcing moral code whose justification it does not itself recognize or to stand by and watch the gradual disintegration of public morality.” Nietzsche believes you are able to break old forms of education. He believes that “to break this education, he must help the youth to have its say, he must light the way for its unconscious resistance with the clarity of concepts and turn into a conscious, loudly consciousness" state of mind.     In Beyond Good & Evil, Friedrich Nietzsche seeks to develop the idea of moral philosophy beyond basic pleasures, how they relate to the general population, and further into our own personal intricacies and how they create a set of rules that apply to most individuals. Throughout the book, Nietzsche articulate well over 200 epigrams, each of which highlights a different aspect of human morality. Nietzsche’s 68th epigram dictates: “‘I have done that,’ says my memory. ‘I cannot have done that,’ says my pride, and remains inexorable. Eventually--memory yields.” When assessing this aphorism, it is not only important to assess why our memory yields and what ensues as a result, but also what would occur if we didn’t. One could argue that we must remember our mistakes and learn from them and, by choosing to forget our mistakes for our own pride’s sake, we stall our own moral progression. However, it could also be said that forgetting our own mistakes is vital to our moral progression because rather than merely learning from our mistakes, by constantly remembering them, we allow ourselves to be caught in a cycle of guilt, preventing us from truly moving on. Rather than blindly assessing the aphorism on its own, one must look through Nietzsche’s lens regarding the concepts of intention and truth in order to determine which of the above interpretations is more plausible. Although the first notion is a reasonable interpretation of Nietzsche’s epigram regarding widely accepted notions of morality, the second proves to be a more valid conclusion when following Nietzschean philosophy. While the first interpretation allows for moral recognition and awareness, the second allows for actual progress in the individual.…
