Nikola Teslas Greatest Inventions
Nikola Tesla was one of the greatest inventors of the 19th and 20th centuries. Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, a village in Croatia. This was also where he had attended middle school. Tesla continued his education at the Polytechnic Institute (a college that offered general education courses) in Graz, Austria. Tesla later completed his education at The University of Prague. Tesla was an extraordinary student who frequently enraged his professors, 09-Sep-2003 http://www.voltaicpower.com) questioning the technological status quo with an insight that surpassed his instructors. against the acceptance of direct current as the sole means of delivering electrical power. (http://www.corrosiondoctors.org/Biographies/TeslaBio.htm) After completing his education Tesla worked at the central Telegraphic Office in Budapest, Hungary from 1881 to 1882.
Nikola Tesla dedicated the majority of his life to his work.
He did not feel the need for romantic attachments. Tesla had no known relationships. In Teslas later years he had once told a reporter, "Sometimes I feel that by not marrying, I made too great a sacrifice to my work ..."(Seifer 2001) Tesla was more-known to seclude himself to his work. When he did, however, engage in social life, many people spoke positively of Nikola. Tesla had a medical condition where his nerve endings were hyper sensitive, in his later years Tesla could not even stand the touch of human hair. Some, however, claim that this was due to Teslas Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This was most likely another factor behind his lack of interest in …show more content…
relationships.
Nikola Tesla worked under Thomas Edison after moving to the United States in 1884 (25-Sep-2012 http://en.wikipedia.org). He redesigned Edison 's Direct Current (DC) generators. Although, after inquiring about payment Edison only offered a small raise in return for Teslas work. Tesla was furious and resigned immediately. This incident started a feud between the two inventors that will last for years to come.
After resigning from his position at Edison 's company, Nikola Tesla started a business of his own, Tesla Electric Light and Manufacturing in April of 1887. The company was located in Rahway, New Jersey. Nikola Tesla 's research went way beyond what has found its way into everyday use. Tesla invented the brushless AC induction motor in the summer of 1883 in Strasburg France. Nikolas A-C motor started the industrial revolution at the turn of the century. (18-Nov-2009 http://www.webarticle.org) The A-C Induction motor is still used throughout the world in industry and household appliances.
Tesla also invented the radio, remote control by radio, super-conductivity, fluorescent lighting, the bladeless turbine engine and pump, the mechanical oscillator, and dozens more. There was much debate on who the inventor of the radio was for many years until the case was settled in the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1943. Radio technology would be impossible without the most essential element, the means to control sine waves. In 1895, Tesla found that if one were to tune two Tesla Coils to the same frequency one could generate and transmit radio waves. (curiosity.com) Tesla found that, one can use remote control radio waves to control a boat from a safe distance. He had planned to sell the technology to the U.S. military as a weapon. Thomas Edison managed to convince the military that the technology that Tesla was presenting was unnecessary in battle.
In 1888 Nikola Tesla started working for George Westinghouse at his company called Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing, in Pittsburgh. Teslas System for generation, transmission, and the use of Alternating Current (AC) power enabled Westinghouse to compete with Thomas Edison and his Direct Current (dc) system, which was standard for the US. In 1890, Thomas Edison attempted to discredit Teslas use of Alternating currents in the state legislature. While attempting to discredit Tesla, Edison was secretly supporting capital punishment by using Alternating Current powered electric chairs (Teslas invention).
In one of Teslas last ventures (Wardenclyffe), Tesla attempted to utilize the power from the earth 's electromagnetic grid. Tesla found that the earth forms a massive generator creating an energy source that can be tapped into if one could cut through the magnetic field. Contrary to popular belief, it was tesla himself that chose to abandon his free energy project. Tesla felt that if the military found the usefulness of this technology, it would be used for destructive purposes. Much like nuclear power has been misused in the past. It is also true that it had been difficult for Tesla to acquire funding for the project. Major corporations did not want to invest in something that they could not profit off. There was no way to monitor how much electricity people would have been using.
After Wardenclyffe, Tesla looked overseas for investors to fund his research. Tesla built Telefunken Wireless Station in Sayville, Long Island. Some of what tesla was unable to achieve at Wardenclyffe was accomplished at Telefunken. The tower was, however, seized and blown up with dynamite for scrap by the US Marine Corp. The Marines claimed to have feared that German spies were using it and that it could have been used as a landmark for German subs. My theory is that Edison had something to do with the tower being blown up.
In 1886, Nikola Tesla patented the first prototype of the Thermo- Magnetic Motor. The motor converts heat into energy. He found that useful energy could be extracted from the heat of ambient air and that electric power in the form of Radiant Energy could be broadcast to everyone in the world through the ground. It was yet another project that he was unable to obtain funding.
Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, but Nikola Tesla powered it with his Alternating Current. Some history books also claim that Marconi was the first to use radio waves. In 1943, however, the Supreme Court ruled Nikola Tesla had the discovery first. Why are these facts not in middle school textbooks? Upon Tesla 's death, much of his writings and work were confiscated and deemed classified by the US government, on the grounds of national security during WWII; aside from some of Tesla 's more well-known achievements.
Nikola Tesla was one of the greatest inventors of the 19th and 20th centuries. Unfortunately, when learning of Thomas Edison in middle school he was nowhere to be found in the textbooks. People seem to have always assumed that when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb he had the means to power it. Looking back on it now, I realize that they never explained how he had "turned it on" that was always a grey area. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, but Nikola Tesla powered it with his AC Generator.
Teslas work goes far beyond his inventions that are used in everyday life.
If it were not for him the world would probably not have radio, or motor vehicles. Tesla Was only years away from harnessing a free energy source for the world, but major corporations backed out of funding his experiments once they found that there was no money to be made. Nikola Tesla is one of the most important yet horribly underappreciated inventors of all time. Teslas legacy is carried on through books, motion picture films, comic books (unfortunately), television documentaries, and live theatre. "Everything we need to understand the universe is virtually around us at all times" – Nikola Tesla
