“Smells like Teen Spirit” was written by Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic. This song was produced by Butch Vig and recorded at Sound City in Van Nuys, California. It was the first track on their second album “Nevermind” which was released September 21st 1991. The band faithfully consisted of Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic and many drummers which at this time was Dave Grohl. The song was placed on a demo tape filled with reversals and sent to Butch Vig. Although the song was distorted because of the band’s loud volume of play, Butch Vig felt that the track had potential.
This track was not intended to become the hit that it has become today as it was thought to lay the path for Nirvana’s next track “Come as you are”. It became the gateway for Alternative Rock to enter the 90s. The song features a style of dynamics, where the music includes being soft and quiet and then loud and hard. Kurt Cobain stated in an interview with Rolling Stone that “I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies.” Cobain admired the Pixies’ music which basically served as a blue print for much of Nirvana’s music.
The origin of the song’s name comes from a joke that Cobain’s friend played on him. Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the band Bikini Hill, spray painted “Kurt smells like teen spirit” on his wall. Kurt took it as a metaphoric statement.
