Is America becoming more unequal? This is a question that could have a vast variety of answers and opinions depending on you speak with. The way a person could answer this question could be dependent on many factors such as the way they were raised, there political beliefs how they look at racial and sexual inequality in the country. There is really no right answer to this question but in this research essay I will give my opinion and my views on this very topic. In my opinion America is becoming unequal for several different reasons. I truly and honestly believe that America has never been nor will it ever truly be equal. Since the beginning of recorded history America has not been equal. From Black African slaves being owned and traded and treated as if they were not humans but property. Today the inequality of race is nowhere near the same level as what it used to be but it still does exist. Some people would argue that there is a Black President so how could America not be equal because it shows that everyone has the same opportunities in life. They would contest that everyone has the opportunity to achieve the American dream and to the pursuit of happiness. Yes everyone may have the God given right to the pursuit of happiness and to achieve the American dream, but not everyone has the means and resources in America to truly go after their dreams. An underprivileged child who is from the inner city who comes from a family that lives paycheck to paycheck, is not afforded with the same opportunities of a child who’s family would be considered upper middle class or wealthy. There has never been a wider gap disconnect between the wealthy and those considered to be poor. In this uncertain time in our country where we have a debt of sixteen trillion dollars and unemployment is steadily on the rise it seems as if that statement has never been truer “The rich get richer while the poor get poorer”. It even seems as if the government for example the house and senate

However, America has for years been showing a different type of what they call equality. For many years class has been around starting with colonial settlers were either enterprising business man or that they were devout Christians fleeing from religious prosecution. Turns out that the majority were economically out casted or they were social burdens that the English were happy to get rid of them. The ones who became indentured servants were the criminals, beggars, and orphans who had no land-owning rights. This shows that people like politicians, landowners, or wealthy families have always occupied a higher stat than a servant who owed no land or no power.…

We are a society who seemingly emphasizes our commitment to the equality of all. We like to think that all people are equal and are afforded the same opportunities. We like to think that outside of our own bubble everyone lives just like us. We know inherently that it is not so. There is rampant inequality throughout society. According to the text book, inequality is defined as” the unequal access to scarce good resources” (Barisco,et al, p. 231.) This inequality can lead to a portion of society not having access to basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. This inequality leads to a large population of hungry and homeless citizens in our cities.…

Institutional racism has shaped inequality with the help of cultural factors. People have become colorblind because of the success of some African-Americans. Oprah is the richest African-American in America but she ranks at number 221 of Forbes 2014 400 richest Americans with three billion dollars. (Forbes, 2014, 1) We also have an African-American in the highest office in the world, The White House. For some reason this has led to the belief that African- Americans are no longer struggling. For some reason when one succeeds that means we all have but that is so far from the truth. As Michelle Alexander puts it, “The fact that some African Americans have experienced great success in recent years does not mean that something akin to a racial caste system no longer exists. No caste system in the United…

My values and beliefs for this topic came from living here the United States. Growing up here for almost nine years have made me realize that they are some inequality issues that are still a problem and that are being ignore by the lawmaker for example gay marriage not all fifty states are allowing gay marriage to be legalized once and for all. I decided to take a class during my senior year of high school to learn more about social inequality. I decided to take American studies and Ethnic and minorities class. In my ethnic and minorities class I learned a lot about inequalities issues and what exactly was going on in the United States. In my American studies we discussed inequality events that occurred In American a long time ago. I learned about gay marriage, disability rights, women rights, African American rights the list goes on. Slowly I started to realize how unfair the system was and has been. Ever since I Took those two classes my perspective in inequality issues has grown. The lawmakers are not pushing the system to change. The lawmakers are not doing anything to help fight…

Equality is still a problem in America today. But like the personal freedoms and civil liberties, equality is also being improved today. Equality most certainly didn’t start off as a working post-war promise. Women were oppressed, African-Americans were segregated and dehumanized. Equality didn’t exist mostly in the 50s and 60s unless it was among white men.…

In a study of a variety of developed countries, the United States had the second highest level of income inequality in the world, right behind Chile. Income inequality has always been a problem in the world, but especially in the United States. There is frequent debate on whether a person is getting a high enough salary or not. If not, the person that is not getting the sufficient funds often resorts back to the argument of their sex, race, or religion. This leads to worrisome debate throughout the country which causes a number of people to point their finger back towards their government. I stand with many other Americans and say that income inequality does threaten democracy in the United States, as well as the world.…

Although equality is a well-settled idea in constitution and on the surface of the laws, its meaning on a day to day level is still hotly contested. Formal equality as between races is stated in American constitution, but the data and report on the inequality of the American lived experience illustrate how much farther the idealized path of equality needs to go. News reports on police violence that tends to kill disproportionately men of color, and the statistics showing that the enduring poverty in this country are largely among communities of…

We live in a country where the wealthy become wealthier and the poor become poorer. Due to the functions of our economy, very few of us can become successful. I was luckily born into what was considered a middle class family. As time progressed, everything became more expensive. With the same salary that my family had, they had to pay for higher insurance costs, food prices, gas prices, and survival needs.…

During the past thirty-three years the gap between the rich, middle-class, and impoverished has become much more prominent. At the early signs of this great economic divergence, people mistook it for a short slip-up in our nations economy, but now the divergence has become a reality of life itself. There were signs that the indifference was beginning to disappear in 2011 when The Occupy Wall Street movement occurred, but its hard to know if these will have any lasting effect in our nations future. We tend to think of America growing more equal in society not less, and it has in ways such as gender equality, equality amongst races, marriage…

For example, the CEO-to-worker-pay ratio in the United States is 354-1, which makes income inequality, especially among minorities the defining challenge of contemporary times (Fitz n.p). For this reason, the government must expand its authority and programs to encompass ways of bridging the inequality that has become a typical problem in today’s American society. Conservatives such as the Republicans have been arguing for cuts that are geared towards improving the welfare of the poor (Amy 2). However, the government should increase funding for poverty programs, education, and job training to ensure that minority groups, as well as other Americans, are empowered…

Beginning in the 1970s, wage rates began to decline and unemployment rates began to rapidly rise. This economic crisis that arose broadened the economic oppression that effected the African American population (Taylor, 2016, p. 53). These conditions remain unremitting in the current economic state of the United States. Undoubtedly, African Americans and other nonwhite minority groups, such as Hispanics, suffer the most from these circumstances, while whites are consistently more prosperous. Many people in the United States believe that persistent racial inequalities, in such cases as wages, income, residence, and healthcare, can be attributed to African American culture and individual failures, not racism (Brown, 1971, p. 6). However, this cannot explain the continuance of inequality once African American individuals acquire the education, skills, and experience necessary to prosper in the labor market. Whites still have an advantage over blacks and the attitudes of many white Americans remain unchanged because of the negative stereotypes that have accumulated. Moreover, the problem with the apparent advantage that whites…

“The average black household income in 1955 was $2,890 just 55% of that a white household $5,228” (Fuller). It was not only income that was lower for blacks, they had a higher illiteracy rate, and well they had to deal with segregation. This shows that blacks did not have it easy at all. “The median household income for black families in 2001 was $33,600, while it was $54,000 for whites” (Fuller). It has been 50 years and whites still make far more than blacks. If we keep going at this rate it will take hundreds of years until blacks and whites are truly equal. All in all a lot has changed to make blacks/whites equal, but there is still room for change.…

Throughout the years that civilization has been created, our society has been flooded with inequality. Women, Slaves, and other minorities have been abused and mistreated. The only way you could be seen as an equal was if you were white or male. Future American generations should be persuaded to accept each other and learn to have open minds to different cultures and races. Equality is one of the main aspects that contributes to the American Dream. I personally am not pursuing the American Dream, but I have a better understanding of what the main aspects are about.…
