the person has. All behavior has communicative value, behaviors differ from intentional ones. A lot of the times we don’t express our emotions whether it’s due to our lack of sleep that causes us to become tired or even if we find someone attractive. Nonverbal communication presents many purposes such as repeating, complementing, substituting, or even a shoulder shrug. Nonverbal communication offers deception clues like face expressions, speech patterns and pupil dilation. We as humans tend to overestimate our ability to investigate others lies when in reality we are only accurate more than half of the time. Nonverbal communication is ambiguous it can have many possible meanings like courtship and sexuality, safeway, nonverbal learning disorder. Gender can differ from women and males, women are much better at recognizing behaviors and they are more expressive. Cultures have different nonverbal languages, differenced can damage a relationship due to the nonverbal behavior. When we are talking we do move our body whether we face toward or away from someone we also do many body gestures to have a precise meaning. We also express messages through touch, appearance, physical characteristics, space, and time.
Some things that really interested me in this chapter was how different cultures can cause a relationship between two people have a negative impact due to the differences of nonverbal communication. Whether it is hand gestures they consider bad or wrong whereas in another culture it’s a good sign. Another thing that had really interested me was how females are more nonverbally expressive than males are. Women also recognize others nonverbal behaviors more than men do.
In this chapter it talked about how we tend we to assume that others are lying when we are accurate only more than half of the time. A way this chapter could relate to my life is a time when my mom was blaming me for taking her car keys and was upset because she had an appointment to go to. I was not home but she kept calling me. Later that day we had found out it was my sister that had took my mom’s keys to by accident. This caused my mom to do many body gestures of how mad she was by putting her hands on her hips and crossing her arms. are powerful predictions of popularity, attractiveness and well being it can influence the sensitivity the person has.
