Norah Jones: Those Sweet Words
Those Sweet Words
Norah Jones

The song that I have chosen is Those Sweet Words by Norah Jones. I chose this song because it displays some of the hopeless emotions of love that my poem also expresses. Both are about a lover who fails to gain the attention of the one they love. The song has a more up beat tone about it however, as if it is not completely hopeless.
Norah Jones is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and actress. Her birth name is Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, she was born March 30th, 1979. She launched her first solo music career with the largely successful album Come Away With Me, which earned a diamond record, She has since released five other albums, all of which are platinum records and each has sold over one million copies. She has won five Grammy awards,
Norah Jones, generally preforms a contemporary and jazzy, but in this particular piece, I find her style to be more of a light country. It does how ever portray some feelings of a hopeless love as with the style of my poem My Lute Awake by Sir. Thomas Wyatt. This song just feels like it fits with the poem to me.
My selection comes from her album Feels Like Home, her second album. This album sold over 15 million copies in its first 28 weeks. This album wasn 't just a reboot of her previous style, she has put more of a personal feel in it, rather than just preforming. She also hints to her hopeless love life, much like Sir Thomas Wyatt does in his poem.
Over all I think this song fits well with my poem because she is singing about a hopeless love that is floating away like balloons in the afternoon sky. Norah knows that her song would be fruitless yet she still preforms it. She isn 't nearly as forthright as Sir Thomas Wyatt though. She does not swear revenge on her would be lover. Norah is a great artist, her music is divine, and she is definitely worth a Google, considering you have probably never heard of her.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963 to gospel and R&B singer Cissy Houston. “By age 11, Houston was performing as a soloist in the junior gospel choir at her Baptist church. As a teenager, she began accompanying her mother in concert, and went on to back artists like Lou Rawls and Chaka Khan” (Huey, Steve). Houston is now described as one of the biggest female pop stars of all time. Over her twenty-seven years in the spotlight that began in 1984, Houston has progressed to become a well-known and admirable icon in both music and film. She has proven herself to be an extraordinary hit maker. Throughout years in stardom, she collectively has sold over 120 million albums worldwide. She also reached “a film box office total of over a half billion dollars” (D., Lisa). She was the only artist to chart seven consecutive #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits, with songs such as “Greatest Love of All”; the first female artist to enter the Billboard 200 album chart at #1 with her second album, Whitney; and the only artist with seven consecutive multi-platinum albums. She writes almost all of her own songs, and they are full of meaning. For example a hit song of hers, ‘Gunpowder and Lead’, is about women and how they should not take any shit from any one, let alone a man who hits them. I’m even sitting here writing this, listening to her music. I mean not all of her songs have such a deep meaning, but they all are certainly songs you can just sit back, and rock out too. I’m in love with it, and such a huge fan. In my eyes, Miranda is unlike any star. She isn’t a skinny, overrated, prissy little bitch who is only popular for one song, or how pretty they are. Miranda isn’t even that main-stream, but still does what she loves. When she was a teen, she was on a show kind of like American Idol that got her career started. She went to Nashville, and came back to Texas almost immediately because she hated the “pop” sound of music, and wanted to stay original, and straight up country. She’s a country-rock girl, with meat on her bones, a strong head on her shoulders, and doesn’t take shit from anyone, and will speak up if she has too. I mean, I don’t know the woman personally, but she sure comes off as this way, and it rocks! Oh and who wouldn’t be inspired by…

I personally feel like the theme of love appears way to often in the media already, so when I chose to find a new poem, I want it to be one that addresses something that society usually turns a blind eye towards. For example, Venessa Marco’s poem entitled “Patriarchy” points out that which many people chose to ignore:…

I selected “I am Offering This Poem,” Ode to My Socks,” and “Bonny Barbara Allan” for all having a common theme. I also selected “All of Me” by John Legend, “The Gift” by Jim Brickman, and “Don’t Let Me Down” by the Chainsmokers. The common theme of all of these is love. Love is an intense feeling of deep affection, and all three of these poems, and songs contain the definition of love.…

The two poems I chose to write about are Elizabeth Bishops “One Art” and “What my lips have kissed” by Edna St. Vincent Millay’s. I chose both of these because they both in a way are describing love, and loss for something or someone. Even though they do not come right out and say it, both poems deal with love and the loss they have experienced. In Bishops poem she talks about how losing comes at ease and how nothing that has been lost has been disastrous. However, in the last stanza of her poem I believe she is talking about the loss of her lover and her talking about it in her poem is how she is coping. She says “may look like (Write it!) like disaster” in the last stanza of her poem is how I believe she is coping with the loss of her lover.…

The next element that I enjoyed from this poem is the tone that the author uses. I think there are two different tones that she is portraying, a sad tone and a stern tone. At the beginning when she is talking about the man holding is dead wife in his arms the tone seems sad. Then it changes when she is talking about the love and chivalry he is showing as well. I imagine her talking about the man’s courage in a very stern tone of voice.…

I chose this song primarily for the reason that it adequately expresses how I view romantic relationships and what I would aspire to have in a relationship. This song speaks particularly to being open in communication and feelings within a relationship, as well as being comfortable with yourself. Additionally, it addresses to not be ashamed of your past, and to be able to trust that the other person within your relationship will accept you without judgment. I feel that this song promotes a friendship-based relationship, which is the type of relationship that I prefer.…
