Norovirus: A Case Study
Norovirus is highly contagious, short term illness which causes gastroenteritis’s and are transmitted directly from person to person direct or indirect contact with infected person (Nazarko, L., 2013, World Health Organization (WHO), 2009). Gastroenteritis is associated when the norovirus enters the human it rapidly replicates and spreads all over which causes severe infection (Friesema .M et al.., 2009). Recent studies suggest that genotype GII.4.It takes around 12 to 48 hours to identify the infection. Norovirus strain has been identified in residencial care facilities this can occur in all ages but older population especially living in care homes or long term care are more vulnerable since they are immunocompromised (Crisp & Taylor.et.al., …show more content…
Therefore, outbreak measures to be taken are proper hand hygiene technique which includes rubbing the hands with alcohol based gels, antiseptic hand rubs, and washing hands thoroughly with liquid soaps with proper disposal of towels (Beckett G & Bright J, 2013). Another precautionary measure is the closure of home and isolation of the patient for until the nursing home is symptom free for at least 48 hours. The effective prevention are through staff members by means of ensuring that they have proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as non- sterile gloves, protective eye wear, face mask and gowns which are disposed securely to prevent recontamination.
