Ati skills module: infection control.
Prevention and controlling infections are very important in so many areas of life. There are so many measures that are taken to control the spread of infections. As health care professionals we have to have the knowledge of nosocomial infection also known as hospital acquired infections so that we can have proper precaution equipment and ways of preventing them.
Number one safest way to prevent infection is proper hand washing technique. At least we have to wash our hands with water and soap for 15 seconds before and after touching patients and also after removing our gloves. At times water and soap will not be available to caregivers so a substitution can be improvised such as 70%

Nosocomial pneumonia is acquired during a hospital stay. It happens when a patient is admitted into the hospital with a medical diagnosis that they are hoping to be treated for and contract the infection of pneumonia through the spread of germs. “Nosocomial pneumonia (NP) clinically presents more than seven days after hospitalization with new fever, pulmonary infiltrates, and leukocytosis. Nosocomial pneumonia is a common nosocomial bacterial infection and is most prevalent in medical and surgical intensive care units. The most common pathogens associated with NP are: P aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and S marcescens (Medscape, 2015). Whereas community acquired pneumonia is contracted in the community. “Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is one of the most common infectious diseases and is an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. CAP is usually acquired via inhalation or aspiration of pulmonary pathogenic organisms into a lung segment or lobe” (Medscape, 2015). The most common organisms involved in causing CAP are: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, and Moraxella catarrhalis.…

Transmission could also be reduced by providing separate room and toilet facilities or placing infected patients together. Staff, patients and visitors should wash their hands with soap water regularly and thoroughly; alcohol hand gel should not be used as this has been proven ineffective against the bacteria. Infected surfaces should also be cleaned thoroughly with water and a cleaning product containing bleach. Doctors are advised to prescribe antibiotics cautiously to reduce the broad- spectrum antibiotics given so that the number of people at risk is…

Therefore, outbreak measures to be taken are proper hand hygiene technique which includes rubbing the hands with alcohol based gels, antiseptic hand rubs, and washing hands thoroughly with liquid soaps with proper disposal of towels (Beckett G & Bright J, 2013). Another precautionary measure is the closure of home and isolation of the patient for until the nursing home is symptom free for at least 48 hours. The effective prevention are through staff members by means of ensuring that they have proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as non- sterile gloves, protective eye wear, face mask and gowns which are disposed securely to prevent recontamination. Therefore, hands are most likely source of cross infection so good hand hygiene should be considered (Cole,M., 2012., Nazarko, L., 2013, NHMRC, 2010., WHO,…

Nosocomial infections and non-healthcare infections pose a risk to communities, but I believe nosocomial infections are more of a risk. Hospitals have ill patients entering the building all the time making it a high bacteria zone. Doctors and nurses are more likely to acquire an infection from a needle stick in a hospital than a non-hospital environment. Because healthcare facilities have so many infected people come through their doors it becomes easier for a perfectly healthy person to get infected without knowing and going out into the community and spreading the…

“Prevention and Management of Healthcare Associated Infections (R18)” is an opportunity fund that’s purpose is to provide research, demonstration, dissemination to prevent and effectively control healthcare associated infections (HAIs). HAIs are infections that are obtained by patients in a healthcare setting. The funding is still being obtained for this research. The other organization participating is the Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is funding testing and development in advances in improving the safe delivery of healthcare. Hospital-acquired infections (HAI) are the infections patients acquire while receiving treatment in a healthcare facility. In 2011, there was an estimated 722,000 HAIs in U.S. hospitals resulting in 75,000 deaths (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2016). In addition to an increase in disease and mortality, HAIs negatively affect patient care by increasing patient length of stay and inpatient costs (Syndor & Perl, 2011).…

Nosocomial Infections (NI) can arise from an inanimate object or substance, other patients, medical personnel, visitors, air, water, even the health care process itself. Also, the use of reusable equipment/supplies, invasive devices or techniques (catheters, valves, etc.). Patients in a hospital setting are also exposed to more drug resistant strains of microbes; as in this setting the microbes are selected at a higher rate than outside the hospital due to antibiotic usage in the hospital. NI usually involve the urinary tract, respiratory tract, surgical incision sites, and blood; again usually points of entry/exit from the human body.…

This essay will explore the subject Infection Control and how Healthcare Professionals control and prevent nosocomial or hospital acquired infections (HCAI’s), defined as an “infection whose development is favoured by a hospital environment, such as one acquired by a patient during a hospital visit or one developing among hospital staff” Oxford Dictionary (2008). Common nosocomial infections include; urinary tract infections (UTI), surgical wound infections, as well as causative agents which are coagulase-negative meticillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia Coli (E-Coli), Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBL’s), Diarrhoea and vomiting (D&V) and Clostridium Difficile (C.Diff) to mention a few. I plan to explore this subject matter to inquire into and evaluate the evidence proposed by published research articles and published literature, alongside that of Government guidelines for the effectiveness and practicability in reducing the frequency of nosocomial infections and nosocomial colonisation and infection within a hospital setting. By evaluating the nursing procedures followed to control and prevent nosocomial infections, I believe that after cautious examination of research can offer Healthcare Professionals, a better understanding of how an action, such as that of the best course of treatment or drug affects and targets a nosocomial infection. By reading and researching my chosen subject I hope to increase and improve my learning, which will allow me to practice and contribute to evidence based-practice as suggested by….…
