North Central Texas Desert
North Central Texas may be turning to desert
By Teresa Watkin

In the last few years Texas has been drying up. According to NOAH weather maps show North Central Texas is need of precipitation. The summer of 2011 was so hot and dry wild fires destroyed much of North Central Texas. There as a lack of rain for 52 days straight. Most of the Possum Kingdom Lake area burnted up bad. Homes were lost and a couple of firefighters lost their lives as well. The town of Graham was lock down so no one could get in or out for 2 days because of the fires. The fires were causing dangerous fire hazards while traveling. In a report I found says reservoirs are drying up little by little. The past summers of 2011 and 2012 we severe conditions for drought (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/images/sjt/drought/WCToutlook.pdf) Burn bans have been in effect for most of Texas for close to 2 years now. Even at times when they are lifted, it takes a couple of days and they are put back on again. I know how everyone gets tired of hearing about global warming, but this is nothing to shrug off. It is a serious matter than needs to be discussed. Finding solutions is what we need to be doing instead of ignoring the problem. It wouldn't take much to fix the problem if everyone agree there is a problem. The glaciers are melting, and Places like Canada and Alaska are used to having snow, are seeing less as the years go by. In time the ice will melt, and the land will eventually flood. Texas is just one small corner of the world, but it is turning to a desert, and I believe it is because of global warming. We need to find ways to rehydrate the earth in this region by planting more trees, making man made lakes to help serve as hydration to the air. It may not seem like it, but recycling will help the air and weather too. Not just in Texas, but everywhere. In some places in Canada and the United States it is mandatory to recycle and separate you trash or you will get a citation for

The population has increased tremendously since the 1930s and that imposes new threats if a major drought were to happen again. One way to prepare for something like this is to follow a ten-step guide produced by The National Drought Mitigation Center. A disaster of this magnitude is hard to prepare for. However, at this, time thirty eight states have some sort of drought plan in place to ensure this natural or man-made disaster doesn't happen again.…

Since the early years of the 1700’s, San Antonio water supply came from its fresh sources; such as, the Olmos Creek and from one of the most famous river in Texas, the San Antonio River. But in nowadays, new sources of fresh drinkable water had to be found or build, mainly because the rapid growth it’s population and San Antonio as a whole. At the present moment San Antonio gets its fresh water supply from eight different sorceries and one the most important is definitely the Edwards Aquifer, which supplies fresh drinkable water to over two million South and Central Texans residents. In the past couple of years, San Antonio; as well as, the State of Texas, has been struggling with drought and other water related problems; such as, the dramatic drop in the water levels. A wise man once said “You won’t miss your water until your well runs dry” (Nesta Robert Marley). This inconvenient truth can be applied to many things in life, especially when it comes to deal with the water problems that San Antonio faces at the moment.…

Through the research I’ve done on global warming it appears to me that there is no problem with it at all, and that there is nothing to worry about. We need to accept that fact that global warming is actually helping the human race in many different ways. For examples the environment is warming up, the ocean levels are rising, and the increase of carbon dioxide are all benefits to the environment and economy. It’s almost as if global warming is turning the earth into a tropical paradise.…

Central Texas, especially Travis County, has been under drought conditions since La Niña, a weather pattern where the surface temperatures are cooler in the Pacific ocean, thus creating drier weather in the southern part of the United States, in 2011 (StateImpact, n.d.). Although this type of weather pattern is typically combated with the arrival of El Niño, which has the opposite effect, it failed to occur in winter of 2012 and central Texas was left with the driest conditions it has experienced since the lowest drought on record in the 1950s (StateImpact, n.d.). Couple this drought with the challenges that central…

    Texas Water Drought

The first step to solving any problem is realizing there is one. Amarillo and the rest of the Panhandle get its water from the Ogallala Aquifer which is a vast yet shallow underground water table located beneath the Great Plains that spans across portions of eight states including the northern tip of the Texas panhandle. A large portion of the irrigated land in the US rests atop this aquifer system, which yields about a third of the nation’s ground water used for irrigation. The Ogallala Aquifer is also responsible for providing drinkable water to almost all of the people who live within the aquifer boundary. This presents a problem because water is being consumed at a faster rate than it can be recharged naturally through rivers or rainfall. The unfortunate part is that once the water is consumed completely it will not be replenished fast enough to support the population who currently depend on it. This poses a threat because the loss of water in the Ogallala Aquifer will lend to the collapse of the central food production in America if something is not done. Additionally, once the water is gone and as long as there is no alternative plan to bring water into the areas that the Ogallala Aquifer feed into, the populations who depend on the Ogallala Aquifer’s water supply will be forced to relocate to new locations with a source of fresh water. The results of the aquifer drying up are not so far from home however. I read recently in an article that Happy, Texas’s population is getting smaller and smaller with less and less economic and agricultural business because some of their water wells no longer reach the aquifer anymore. This is forcing some of their citizens to seek employment outside the city up to an hour away. Many towns, including Amarillo, that rely on the Ogallala Aquifer will undoubtedly share the same fate as the faithful town of Happy, Texas at the rate water from the aquifer is being consumed.…

Many people in Texas regard water as oil because of its long and hot drought seasons that come most of summer and fall. Now more than ever has Texas grown so rapidly. Since the 70s Texas has been at a steady incline in both population growth and resource usage. With the constant growth and usage of open water sites across the lone star state, many cities are trying to grasp rights to the water below them. One city in particular has almost exclusively relied on ground water. Texas and its people, may be at risk due to Texas policies, corporate control, and overall resource management.…

But if that happened without global warming people wouldn't know what it was. A solution to global warming I might say that there is no single solution to global warming, which is primarily a problem of too much heat-trapping carbon dioxide methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. Humans can help avoid Global warming by burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, oil and gasoline raises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Global climate change is certainly one of the top environmental issues today. These are plenty of examples/explanations as to why Global Warming is real and for who doesn’t think so should think…

One reason everybody should recycle is animals are dying and starving. From garbage being everywhere. Acorrding to www.humanesocity.org they found birds poisined from lead weight. Also they found skunks with yogurt cups on their heads not being able to eat. Also pelicans had fishhooks in their stomachs. The worst that the have found was they found a raccoon with beer cans on its paws there was no fur, no skin, it's all flesh. Clearly almost everybody doesn't like to see animals suffer. That's why…

Now on to the next Desert, situated along the border of America (Arizona and California) and Mexico lies another important region the Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran occupies 100,000 square miles along the two countries. The Sonoran is the result of a rain shadow desert being bordered by the Peninsular Ranges in California as well as being in a latitude around 30 being effected by the Subtropical high. The Subtropical high is an area from the 20 -40 latitude where air subsides by compression leading to a temperature inversion and acts as a barrier to vertical convection and is largely responsible for aridity in the region. Unlike the Mojave, the Sonoran is mostly considered a Low Desert especially in the Yuma Desert region. One area showing the…

In the past 100 years, the temperature of our Earth has increased by about 4.5 degrees (Guggenheim). This may not seem like a lot, but on a global scale, it can have a huge impact. Global Warming is a serious problem, and it should be taken very seriously. Unless we take action now, we will have major consequences to deal with later on. These include, but are certainly not limited to, extreme weather, a decline in polar life, and effects on human health. It seems like Global Warming has become such a political issue that people tend to take a side based solely on the political party they support. This needs to stop. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, you cannot ignore the facts. The temperature of our atmosphere has been increasing at an alarming rate in recent years. Global warming is happening, and action needs to be taken to stop it, no exceptions.…
