Before the war began, the region of Korea was already extremely politically divided. The Communistic government of the North and the Democratic government of the south both wanted to spread their governmental ideologies throughout the region. Eventually the tension boiled over into acts of war, resulting in a horrible war that lasted for three years. The United Nations took allegiance with the South, whereas communist nations (the Soviet Union and China) allied with the North. The United States additionally independently supported South Korea. An armistice was signed in 1953, and the agreement called for a demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the two now independent countries.
