Henry first talks of having no affection towards her, only bothering because it’s easier than going to a brothel (Hemingway 30). He eventually falls in love with her however, and they wind up spending his entire hospital stay together. In The Role of Catherine Barkley, the author reports that Jackson Benson describes Catherine as heroic in the way that she “is the one who taught Henry to love.” This might be the case as Henry never discusses past lovers or even much of his family. Catherine and Henry become so much in love her having a child accidently doesn’t even phase him, as long as it doesn’t get in the way of their love of course (Hemingway 138). While in Switzerland, they would rarely go out of their house, and almost never left each other (Hemingway 290). The book ends with the loss of Catherine and their stillborn baby (Hemingway 331). Henry is terrified of this happening and prays that it doesn’t. When it does he leave the hospital and the book is over. This is the final scene of the book and perhaps the most important, as it is the most life…

The document is very sympathetic towards Catherine, and does not provide multiple sides of an event, instead going in-depth on Catherine's actions and motives. The source will be warily quoted, as between the interpretation of primary sources and translations that occurred before actually writing the book, it is unlikely a quote or excerpt is word for word.…

The directorial decision to include Catherine’s eulogy and the post funeral party scene in the film effectively enhanced character development. Catherine’s eulogy was significant in displaying Catherine’s behaviour in front of crowds, and her rash decision to make a speech at her father’s funeral. Catherine is shown to make emotional and rash decisions on the spot, not thinking of consequence. Catherine’s shocking speech is made in a calm tone of voice, but shows her clear resentment towards the crowd gathered at her father’s funeral – “Where’ve you all been the last 5 years?” At the end of her speech, she exclaims “I’m glad he’s dead” and walks out. As she is walking out, we see that Clair stands up after her, but it is Hal who chases her down – this event…

Nell is modest, but loves Thomas. Maude Clare, the spurned mistress is bitter, forceful; “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”. Like 'A Triad', Maud Clare is a woman 'eaten up' by a love that has died, jealous, angry, bitter and out of control. Is she a victim of his rejection? Or her own passion? Either way she can't let go. In many ways this links to the way Maxim's second wife views his first wife Rebecca. She sees Rebecca as a 'goddess' whom she wishes to emulate. Little does she know that Rebecca was a spiteful woman, who made Maxim very unhappy and provoked him into shooting her. In Rossetti's 'Noble Sisters'; sibling jealousy is portrayed, but not rivalry. One sister can't let the other go. This theme is exemplified in 'Goblin Market,' a poem that tells of the power of sacrifice. In Northanger Abbey, Catherine hates the hold that General Tilney has over his son, leading to her own paranoia (thinking he killed his…
