Not the Ordinary Birthday Celebration

It was the morning of February 20th, 2007, my great grandmother’s birthday! The agenda for the day was to first finish packing up the house because move in day for our new home was just hours away. Once that was all done and the truck was locked and loaded us as a family would head to TGI Fridays to celebrate my great grandmother’s birthday as we did every year since her passing. TGI Fridays was where we had her last birthday dinner before she passed; so it was very significant to us, it had become our family’s tradition. It was pretty chaotic in the house that morning, the only ones there to pack were my 3brothers, my little sister and I. My dad worked from sun up until sun down every day except for Sundays; lucky for us today was a Tuesday. My mom was 9 months pregnant which came as a surprise to my siblings and I because we had only found out 2 months ago, but that’s a different story; my mom was to do no lifting so everything was left to us. Mom sat on this little green lawn chair in the corner of the living from dictating everyone’s every move. All I kept thinking to myself was “man I would rather be in school.’’
I’m the second oldest and the first girl out of the bunch, so almost all of the heavy items came flying my way, and if anything got messed up it was my fault. Unfair? I know but that was just how my life went. I’m taking the bed frames out of the bedrooms and into the truck when I run into my oh so annoying little 7 year old spoiled rotten sister blocking the stairs because she wants to play around and not let me through. I whisper, “if you do not move out of my way you little maggot I will kick you down every single stair you stand in front of.’’ I knew in all reality that I wouldn’t, however she didn’t know that and sometimes the tone in my voice would scare her just enough to leave me alone for a while; but not

Trying to go to school the next day. Standing in the shower thinking maybe if I dont get out I wouldn't have to start my day and move on with it all. But as the water turns to a shivering cold I realize it’s all too real. Pushing through the first five periods of the day, the last three seemed as too much. Feeling as if I will never be able to be happy again. All these gloomy days crafted me into who I am today. This whole experience making me grow up just a little bit faster, and a little more mature and understanding seeming as I already live the life as an adult, but only being a…

It was two in the morning. I got out of bed, running on three hours of sleep. I ran downstairs after getting ready for a long bus ride. I saw my mom and grandpa waiting downstairs, as my grandpa was going on the trip with me. When at the school, teachers checked our bags, kind of like the airport. After this check, we were off (well, about an hour later). Now it was off on our new home for the next 12 hours. For the first three hours, everyone slept. It was boring and I will skip that. We then pulled over for our breakfast stop. When we stopped, the teachers passed out our boxes of bagels. We proceeded to get back on the road next, which was a rather long time. About four hours of driving through Ohio farms and Pennsylvania hills,…

That was the day that my grandpa passed away. Every single part of that date is engrained in my memory. My parents had driven up to Wisconsin, and my older sister Lauren drove home for college to stay with me. It wasn’t out of the normal for my parents to quickly leave, so I didn’t think much of it. I remember going to hang out with Tatum, my best friend of the time. It was a nice day outside, so of course we were outside playing on the trampoline and doing all our weird routines like we always did. Her family, who was like a second family to me, decided to go out to eat so they brought me along. We went to La Charitas. I remember how Mrs. Teeple pulled out a funny card game for us to play, and I remember Tatum cutting out faces in her tortilla, making us all laugh. When we got back to the house we saw that my sister called, so I said bye to the Teeples and walked one minute down the road to my house. Lauren, who is one of the most emotional in the family, was left with the task of telling me that my grandpa had passed away. I had just grabbed a snack of chocolate cheerios as she started to tell me the news. I didn’t know how to react, so I ran into the basement directly to the furthest corner I could find. Lauren tried talking to me, but I wanted to be by myself. One of the hardest things I have ever done was talking to my dad on the phone after finding out. He called to tell me the plans, that he was coming home to get us, and…

It was step-up day, and we were playing games on the field with the fourth/soon to be fifth graders. I saw my dad walking towards the field, and I knew it was time to get ready. I said goodbye to my friends and they wished me good luck. I was really excited to see my family coming in for the evening shabbat services. We headed up to the temple, and take some pictures with my grandparents and cousins. I greeted an endless amount of relatives, family friends, and people I have never met before. The service was beautiful, and the wine (grape juice for me) and challah were passed out. Dinner was served in an adjacent building where we visited with relatives from all over the country. First cousins, second cousins, third cousins twice removed, you name it. Uncles, aunts, great uncles and aunts and of course my grandparents all join us for a delicious dinner. We all talked and caught up, and it made me more comfortable to see that my family was there to support me, and I was excited for…

Tears were rolling down her face smearing her make-up when she said “Dad I understand why you cannot be here but are you going to keep your promise that you made to me and grandma, about you getting your degree?” I felt broken hearted inside because I was not there but for a few seconds my mind drifted off to the morning I made my mother a promise to attend college and graduate.…

We had to say our last goodbye to our little house we had lived in our whole lives. When we were leaving, my family and relatives were at the house saying their goodbyes and giving hugs. “Do we really have to leave everyone and move, mom?” I asked. “Your dad and I have agreed that it will be a good move for the family, now stop complaining about it.” she told me. The only thing I wanted to do that day was stay in our old house and cry because I didn’t want to leave my family at all, I was really dreading moving to Florida. When we headed off on the roads I was still upset about the move, but my parents kept telling me it will be okay but that didn’t help me feel any…

It had been a crazy morning as I ran all over my house trying to find my jacket and boots. My mom had been admitted into the hospital that morning for a massive headache and all I could think about was whether or not she would be okay. I took her to the emergency room that day before so going to class was the last thing on my mind. My father and sister had agreed to stay with her till I ended class so I was more at ease knowing she wouldn’t be alone. After running all over my house looking for my things I quickly gathered myself to make my train. I finally got to Penn Station with four minutes to spare. I quickly walked to where the rest of my class was as we waited for instructions to where we would…

This was a fantastic day. The night before was thinking, “Wow, it’s actually happening. Tomorrow”. Then I woke up the next morning. On a friday! How much better could that have been. There was a football game later, classes went super quick, there was an assembly I was excited for as well. So the classes were short because of the assembly. I ended up getting picked up early. Right after 6th period. When i was headed to the gym. I got called down to the office. My mom got me and then we went straight to the DOL. It took a few minutes, I’d say around 30 minutes because they needed my waver from my drive instructor in drivers ed in to be able to give me my permit. I wasn’t able to get a picture on my permit because my mom didn’t get my actual birth certificate. But then the lady said to get behind the desk and sign everything. Then she printed it out and she handed it to me and we walked out with it and my mom handed me the keys. I got in the car and she did the mom thing and took a bunch of pictures. But in that moment I felt that feeling of growing up. I felt so trusted and I thought about all these huge privileges I had just earned.…

Today started like any other day. Mom came in and woke me up. I was still groggy like an old person waking up from a deep sleep. My mom laid out my clothes last night. She takes care of me like a king takes care of his people. I do not know what I would be without her.Once I got dressed and mom helped me put my shoes on. We walked downstairs and Lindsey and Shannon, my sisters, were getting ready for school. I walked downstairs to the first floor and saw my dad leaving. I ran to him to give him a good bye hug. Then I had breakfast. I am pretty sure that it was scrambled eggs with ketchup. My life is as hectic as an exterminator during an infestation. Or so I thought.…

It all started last summer, when Mom and I were in LL Bean. For those of you who don’t know, my hometown of Freeport Maine, is the head quarters of all LL Bean stores. It’s a huge complex of stores, including a giant hiking boot out front. There are a lot of kids’ areas, so that the parents can shop, while their kids are playing. Anyways, it was August 25. Just an average day in the life of Marielle (that’s me). “How much longer Mom?” I whined. Until, that life changing moment, I had always been kind of a whiny spoiled brat. Looking back on that, I started to realize that. And suddenly, I got a terrible headache, and felt like I was going to die! I said to Mom, “I have to go to the bathroom,” and frantically ran…

I felt excitement as we were picked up by my aunt and uncle in their black mini-van. I wondered why my cousins weren’t there, but my aunt explained how they couldn’t stay up this late and how it was a surprise. I felt special. We arrived at their house in Hingham, and they carried my sleeping sister into their house and laid her down in the bed. As I was put to sleep, I hugged the phone my dad gave me and remembered that anytime I needed him, just to call. I needed him now.…

On that first day of school, I woke up very early in the morning with so much anticipation. I slowly sat on my bed fully awake and wondering what the day ahead was going to be like. I rushed to the bathroom to quickly take a shower. After taking a shower, my mom pulled my long brown hair into a nice tight ponytail. After I finally finished my early morning preparation to school, my mother tossed my lunch box and water in my backpack.…
