In the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” the themes of youth & Innocence are conveyed throughout the poem. In the text the elements of title, setting/imagery, author's presentation of information, and ideas are used to express the theme in the poem. In the poem the author uses the element of the title to relate to the themes of innocence and youth because the title means, nothing good lasts …show more content…
forever. ¨Her hardest hue to hold¨ is stated in the text and explains how Spring won't last forever, just like everything else. Although, in the story the title doesn’t help the reader better understand the themes expressed and doesn’t help the reader better understand the themes. Another element that relates to the theme of the poem is the setting/imagery. The poem uses the element of setting/imagery because the author compares how nothing lasts forever to nature. In the text ist states, “So Eden sank to grief,” meaning that Winter is approaching and all the plants are dying. For example, a flower it blooms, lives a short life, it starts to wilt, the petals fall off, dies, then next Spring another flower blooms. The Ideas presented in the work also contribute to the theme of the poem because nothing is endless. In the poem it states, “But only so an hour.” This quote means that nothing is permanent. The last element used to express themes in the piece is author's presentation of information. The author of the poem uses repetition to present the ideas in the text. The phrase nothing lasts forever is repeated multiple times throughout the poem. In the text is states, “Her hardest hue to hold. “Nothing gold can stay.” Both of theses quotes convey how the author repeats the phrase many times to get the express the theme in the story. As, one can see the author uses many elements to indicate the theme of innocence and youth throughout the poem.
In the text The Outsiders the themes of youth & Innocence are expressed throughout the story.
In the book the elements of setting, ideas, & authors presentation of ideas help express the theme of the story. The title does not convey theme in the poem. The elements setting indicates theme in the story because there are two gangs that hate each other. They live on opposite sides of the town, fight and argue about many different things. In the text it states, “Not like the Socs, who jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next. Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in awhile.” This quote explains how the greasers are the cool ¨tuff¨ kids in town and the Socs are the upper class citizens who are completely opposite of the greasers. Another element that conveys theme in the poem is ideas in the story. In the book the ideas presented are gangs, violence, poverty, and fights. These ideas make the reader better understand the theme and the characters lives. In the text it states, ¨In New York, Dally blew off steam in gang fights, but here, organized gangs are rarities--- there are just small bunches of friends who stick together, and the warfare is between the social classes. A rumble, when it's called, is usually born of a grudge fight, and the opponents just happen to bring their friends along.” This quote means that in the book there are different social classes and gangs that get into many different fights and disagreements. The next element that expresses theme into story is the author's presentation of ideas. The author uses dialogue, actions, & characters thoughts/ feelings to indicate theme. The author's presentation of ideas allows better understanding to the characters and their lives. In the text is states, " ´This house ain't messy. You oughtta see my
house.’ ‘I have. And if you had the sense of a billy goat you'd try to help around your place instead of bumming around.’ " This quote shows dialogue used in the story. Another quote from the text using actions is,” Dally's eyes were closed, but when I spoke he had tried to grin and had told me that if I ever did a stupid thing like that again he'd beat the tar out of me.” This quote reveals how the author uses actions such as speaking or blinking to reveal the theme. A quote from the text that shows the author's use of characters thoughts/feelings is, " That was his silent fear then--- of losing another person he loved. I remembered how close he and Dad had been, and I wondered how I could ever have thought him hard and unfeeling " This shows Ponyboys thoughts on feeling the way that someone else feels. Those are the three ways the author uses author's presentation of ideas. There is one more element but, it doesn't help the reader understand the theme and it is the title. The title of the story The Outsiders does not help the reader better understand the theme of the book. Although, in the poem this element does help the reader better understand the theme of the poem and better helps the reader understand the theme of the poem. When you look at the book, but have´t read the text then you wouldn't know anything about the book. The title doesn't hint to the theme of the book and isn’t an useful element. Therefore, the elements of setting, ideas, & authors presentation of ideas help express the theme of innocence and youth in the book.
In summarization, both of the texts share the themes of innocence and youth. For people, they would be treasure their childhood and purity. Preferring to hang out with friends or going to school is someone treasures their childhood. People would rather be a child then face the struggles of being an adult. These are the people appreciate and are grateful for the minor things in life and remember them. Therefore, both the texts “Nothing Gold Can Stay” & The Outsiders display the themes of youth and innocence.
