1. List and describe three ways to access the CLI.
Attach a rollover cable to the PC’s COM port and then to either the Auxiliary or Console port on the router. Connect to the Console port because messages from the router are logged on this line. The Auxiliary port is used for remote access and can also be used if the Console port is damaged or not responding. The third way to access the CLI is through Telnet.

2. Explain the difference between user EXEC and privileged EXEC modes.
The user EXEC mode allows only a limited number of basic monitoring commands. The privileged EXEC mode provides access to all router commands.

From a cold start, the ROM chip performs a POST to make sure that all the hardware is functioning properly. Then a bootstrap program is loaded from ROM. The bootstrap program is responsible for locating and loading the operating system or IOS. By default, the bootstrap program first looks in flash memory. If flash is empty, it broadcasts for a TFTP server to see whether the router can download in IOS. Finally, if both of these attempts fail, the bootstrap program loads the basic IOS located in ROM. After a fully functional IOS is loaded, it then looks for the startup configuration file. First, it looks in NVRAM. If NVRAM is empty, it broadcasts for a TFTP server. Finally, if neither place contains a startup configuration, the IOS provides an opportunity to enter setup mode.
