The benefits of creating a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) are numerous and include such things as less bandwidth consumption, greater security, and the ability for users to be in different geographical locations while still sharing resources. One plan to segment the network is to divide it into broadcast domains, reducing network congestion and also increasing security. The network will be segmented according to group functions. For instance, the engineering department will have one segment, the call center will have another segment, operations will have another segment, and the marketing department will have another segment.
To improve security, each segment will be separated from the rest of the network, allowing access to be regulated between the segments. Controlling access to the individual segments with user groups which are based on the same segments as the network is the most effective way of increasing security. This step will make sure that each group will have the access that they need while still allowing everyone to be able to access what they need as well.
A VLAN membership based on port assignment will help to facilitate any future restructuring of the physical layout. This …show more content…
VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) will add speed and efficiency to the network while reducing overhead and building the strength of the network. Switches on the network must be configured in two ways for VTP to work properly. There must be at least one VTP Server and VTP clients. Changes to the VTP must be made in VTP Server mode and will be communicated to all other VTP client switches. Also, the network needs to be physically laid out in a star topology as a backup to the VLAN to ensure that the network continues to operate during a
