The scope of nursing for the registered nurse in the state of Virginia is determined using a decision making model developed by the Virginia Board of Nursing and includes if the task is expressly forbidden, knowledge of clinical skills, if the task is within the standard of care, and if the nurse is prepared to assume accountability for the task (Virginia Board of Nursing, 2017). In Virginia the RN can remove and place PICC lines if the RN has sufficient training and knowledge (Virginia Board of Nursing, 2012).
