Nursing has continually evolved throughout time. From St. Benedict in 250 BC who initiated “The Benedictine Nursing Order” to Mildred Montag 1957-1994 with the development of “the Education of Nursing Technicians.” And, now, with nurses pursuing their advanced professional degrees from ADN to BSN we too are a part of this nursing evolution. As our world changes so must nursing to respond to the many demands of a continually evolving health care system and meet the changing needs of patients, nurses must achieve higher levels of education. It is not only that achieving a higher education would meet the needs of our patients, but, that it is the prudent path to take with differences being proven in lower mortality rates, fewer medication errors, and an increase in positive outcomes for our patients. In making the transition from ADN to BSN there are several competency differences.…
Nurses are often times resistant to changes. Another barrier would be increased demand on the educators. No money is needed to make these changes.…
The Institute of Medicine report shares many views of transformation for all aspects of nursing. These views contend that several changes will need to happen for the future of healthcare to be successful. No one ever predicted ten years ago that there would be an IOM report stating these perspectives of healthcare, but there was always someone attempting to predict the future of nursing.…
When considering the impact on nursing due to the report on The Future of Nursing (IOM report, 2010), the need for increased nursing education becomes even more relevant. The nursing profession constitutes the largest segment of the medical field. Thus, nursing will undoubtedly have a vital role in the development of the medical field. However, according to the IOM report, “A number of barriers prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to rapidly changing healthcare setting and the evolving health care system” (IOM report, 2010).…
Key Message # 1: “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training. (Institute of Medicine, 2010, p. 85) The goal is to have a more patient centered care system. To do this the nurses’ role must be transformed for the goal to be achieved. The legislations goal is to transform the career beyond, acute and specialty cares do to the changes that are occurring in our population and todays nursing. The changes will affect all members of the heath care team. It is important for changes to occur to lower the safety risks that we have in health care today. Nursing is so broad in its career field, that there are many pathways one could take, whether it is nursing research to direct patient care. Since, Florence Nightingale founded…
Based on the 2010 IOM Report, our nation is more than capable of accomplishing a complete reformation of our healthcare that will maximize the availability, accessibility, and quality of care given to patients. Nurses, especially, have the opportunity to play the most vital role in the reformation process. Changes in nursing education, nursing practice, and the increase in nurse leadership roles are only a few of the ways change can…
Nursing profession is the largest division of the healthcare employees. Nurses play an important role when it comes to patient care. There are many obstacles that prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to constantly changing healthcare system and to make changes and advance health, these obstacles need to be overcome. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation along with Institute of Medicine (IOM) proposed to assess the need to transform the nursing profession in 2010. The report included making…
As health care advances so should nurses. Nurses need to be encouraged at the educational to be lifelong learners. As patients present with more complex problems nurses need to have the most up to date education and training available. Nursing education needs to be updated and adaptive enough to change with patients changing needs. Nurses need to have the most up to date technology and science so that quality evidenced based care can be provided. Facilities need to allow and even promote advancement. There need to be educational opportunities that are easy to transition from Associate Degree to…
When looking at the future of nursing based on IOM’s recommendations, it is optimistic but it is also “entirely dependent on the willingness of the profession to develop the role capacities and leadership essential to make a difference” (Porter-O’Grady, 2011, p. 34). Meeting the goals remains in the hands of the profession to play its full role by advocating and participating in the necessary changes that will ultimately create and more skilled and educated workforce.…

Since nursing is a dynamic profession, quality improvement to achieve the best patient care or outcome is very vital to continued care and wellness of our patients. Apart from improving direct patient care which is always the fundamental of nursing, technology and informatics has become the “intersection between nursing, cognitive, computer and information science” (Nunnery, 2012).…
Transforming the Future of NursingThe Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2010 report on the Future of Nursing reiterates the facts related to the dire need for a comprehensive overhaul of the nursing educational system, how the nursing profession is underutilized and an overwhelming consensus that the future success in our healthcare system can be dramatically improved by increasing the number of advanced nurse leaders. The recommendations are based upon several mitigating circumstances: the 2010 Affordable Care Act, the advancements in medical technology, the decreasing numbers of professionals entering primary care practices versus the increasing number of advanced practicing nurses and physician assistants. The focus of the report dealt with transforming education, practice and leadership.…

One of the trends in the nursing practice is the decision making process. As I’m working in the OR (Operation Theater) I plan my procedure setting after talking to the patient and taking history, because nurses choose history to make their meaningful decision. The health of not just the individual but the family and community is affected by the decisions made by a nurse. I take decision about how the room should be set such as; like the position of the patient, the equipment needed, and the temperature of the room. The second trend is nursing history shows how modern technology has raised and highered the standard for the nursing degree. The old view for the needs of the patient was operated with simple equipment, now technology are available making the care delivery an easier task for nursing, more efficient, and safer. The third trend that influenced my perspective of nursing practice is education. The past had very different training and education for nurses than what we have now. In the past people were using herbs mixed with wine was used to sedate the patient instead of anesthetic gases that we use now. Back then any run-of-the mill person could be called a doctor or nurse. Now nurses are required to attend collages and be licensed, due to the specialization of nursing practices and advancements. This has helped to earn my certification in the OR, and now able to start my journey to my BSN. These trends have greatly influenced my perception of nursing.…
From the beginning, nurses have sought to improve their knowledge and skills. Their strive to provide better care and outcome for their patients have made this an innovative profession. In health care, rarely is there a problem that a nurse or group of nurses has been unable to solve. This forward movement of knowledge is obtained in two disciplines. The first being through continuing education and the second is through advancement in formal education. The future of nurse is multifaceted with consideration towards advanced education, current nurses, an aging population and an aging nursing population.…
