Therefore, a nurse’s role involves the practice of communication skills, using both verbal and non-verbal approaches and the importance of active listening in order for both nurse and patient to benefit; the nurse will effectively improve their own skills and more predominantly the patient will have received dignity and respect, in order for them to feel that they have been heard and valued, (Delves-Yates, 2015). The NMC code of conduct for nurses and midwives also stresses the importance of using a range verbal and non-verbal communication, with cultural sensitivities also being adhered to with the advice that reasonable steps should be undertaken to meet people’s language and communication needs, whilst providing assistance to those who require help to communicate not just their own but also other people’s needs making it more accessible to attend to a patients personal and health needs, (REF NMC CODE). Delves-Yates, 2015, suggests that verbal communication relates to the use of spoken word, and is often extended to include the written word as well. Hull, 2016, claims that nonverbal
