Nursing Entrance Essay
It's an exciting time in my life! I have a tremendous opportunity to create my future, and have now come to my first major crossroad as I begin this journey. Having realized that life is about choices, I am very fortunate to clearly know that my future purpose is to help others, while also challenging myself to the be the best that I can be. A career in healthcare is my desire, and represents the opportunity for me to realize my dreams. As such, I expect to be the very best and therefore want to receive my education from xxx College, clearly the leader in my desired field of study. I ask that the xxx team accept me into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, with my intention to ultimately enter into the Master of Science Program in the specialized field of Nurse Anesthesia.

If Clarkson College could only admit one more student, why should it be me? I am confident that my personal character, beliefs and work ethic align directly with those values that xxx represents, and the Healthcare industry requires.

Who am I?
Born and raised in a small community in Central Illinois, I spent my childhood growing up near family and friends. Being part of a very stable and happy family, I had no immediate pressure to worry about my future or the direction I would ultimately take. Like many young people, I focused on the social aspects of high school, actively participating in sports, gymnastics, dance and the extra-curricular aspect of this time of my life. Hindsight always makes things more clear, as I now know that I should have expended more of my effort towards academics with a focus on the future. However, I have no regrets, as this set the stage for a dramatic change in my outlook.

My family relocated in 2011 to the xxx area. My father accepted a position with a new company, my family moved from the place that I was born and raised, and my life immediately changed. My friends were no longer close-by, and extended family was now 8 hours away.

While researching texts written and published about Nurse Practitioners, I have found that Nurse Practitioners are rapidly becoming the top health partner choice for many Americans. Nurse Practitioners have been servicing patients for over forty years. The NP role had its initiation in the mid-sixties in response to a lack of physicians in the United States. They can perform very extensive and concentrated examinations; distinguish and treat common keen illnesses, as well as laboratory tests; and educate and instruct patients and their loved ones about maintaining a healthy lifestyle and possible health care options. In all fifty states Nurse Practitioners are allowed to prescribe medications to patients, including controlled substances. Only twenty-six states allow Nurse…

There are several advanced practice nurses in the United States. Advanced practice nurses consist of registered nurses who have a master’s degree or doctorate degree in nursing and specialize in a certain area. According to the textbook definition, “Advanced Practice Nursing is the patient-focused application of an expanded range of competencies to improve health outcomes for patients and populations is a specialized clinical area of the larger discipline of nursing” (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014). Advance practice nurse roles include direct care roles such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives and indirect care roles such as nurse educators, nurse informaticists, nurse administrators, and nurse executives. These APN roles play a vital part in the future of healthcare. Understanding the role and scope of practice of an APN helps to show the similarity and help differentiate between each role and its specialty. This class has explained what it means and takes to practice as an advanced practice nurse. This paper will compare and contrast roles of APN’s and explore regulatory rules and requirements for NPs in Mississippi. Core…

Nursing is a very challenging and interesting career which involves hard work and commitment. Since I started studying Health and Social Care, my interest in Nursing has grown. This has inspired me to study Child Nursing as I believe that my studies can be practically applied. My interest in and appreciation for this career has been encouraged by family members who work in the NHS, and who have made me aware of its less glamorous side, as well as the positivity of caring for others.…

Throughout my entire high school career, I have been continuously thinking about my future in college. I have always been interested in both engineering but similarly science and medicine. During high school, the majority of my classes involved some sort of science. I even began taking classes at UW-Fond du Lac during the summer involving both science and engineering. This led me to decide that I was going to study biomedical engineering in college. During the latter of my junior, I began to determine what college would be most suitable for me. It didn’t take long for me to come across UW-Madison and their phenomenal Biomedical Engineering department.…

Little did I know at the time, my first experience with nursing occurred when I learned to count calories in the sixth grade. It was a slightly misguided attempt to maximize my health. This small understanding of what it means to seek health started the bit of snow rolling that began to collect a bit more snow and a bit more, and it took rolling through much more experience and exploration to turn this tiny bit of snow into the more comprehensive understanding of health, nutrition and nursing that I have today – the large snowball. I’m not going to talk about calories now. The snowball has grown much larger than that, growing much as the field of nursing has grown: to encompass the entirety of health, healing and living a full life. I’m going to give a picture of my background through three important issues beyond the operating room but central to the field of nursing: cultural self-awareness, human presence (care), and critical thinking. These three issues serve as springboards for describing my own preparation for the study and work of becoming a nurse, as well as highlighting my educational goals and career plans.…

Internationally the concept of specialized expert or advanced nursing is not new and can be identified as early as the 19th century in the United States Civil War. (Hamric et al., 2005; Jacobs 2007). Advanced nursing practice, however, became definitively established in the USA in the 1970’s through advances in educational preparation and clinical practice roles for both the CNS and NP (Harmic et al.). The present-day CNS role is also established in Australia, Taiwan, China, Japan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom (Chen, 2009; Hamric et al.). In each country the definition and scope of practice of the CNS are influenced by factors such as the national economy, culture, education, practice standards…

After the sudden passing of my mother in 1999, I became a mother figure at the age of (twelve??) to my younger sibling. Whether it was applying a band-aid to a scrape or kissing a small bruise, I did what was necessary to care for my younger brother. Years later, in the summer of 2011, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer; I returned from Spain to Chicago to help her during her radiation treatments. For the seven weeks during her treatment, I was by her side comforting her, encouraging her, laughing with her, and even crying with her. I held her hand to comfort her at every appointment, every ultrasound, and every blood test. The responsibility and care in which I provided during this time was a learning experience. It presented great insight into the health profession from the patient and caregiver’s perspective. I always considered the health profession as what I was meant to do in life but the ultimate push factor towards this field has been what I definitely consider, a journey.…
