Within my A level studies I have acquired many useful skills that will help me with my study at university, for example in my English language lessons I’ve learned the importance of doing independent research on ideas that will help me with my coursework and therefore allowing me to be organised, capable of managing my time and prioritising my workload. This will help me with a nursing degree because it is vital to be organised in the surroundings of a hospital especially as a nurse you need to …show more content…
be capable of adapting to all situations and people.
Media studies has helped me develop various skills within the nursing field, such as; team work, computer skills, and patience.
Learning these skills has helped me a lot not only in academic aspects but also socially as I am now capable of socialising with people that I don’t know well. Furthermore I have also learned to overcome stress and pressure during the period of filming my sequence which is essential for nursing as there will be challenges every day that I would have to be expected to overcome and therefore has lead me to become very committed and self-motivated in everything that I do.
Theology has allowed me to look at different points of views and perspectives in society which is a preparation for the real world, particularly with becoming a nurse as you will be expected to be open minded and non-judgemental when dealing with different people and their circumstances. Moreover theology has also really helped me develop a deeper understanding of the importance of helping others. It is my belief that there is no greater honour than to help others who find day to day tasks harder and so it would be my pleasure to give them support and …show more content…
warmth.
Extra curriculum activities that I have done has really helped me more in deciding that nursing is what I want to do in the future. Activities that I have volunteered for include peer mentoring and maths tuition to the under achieving students in the younger years. This has allowed me to help these students and motivate them. I believe everyone is capable of achieving with the right encouragement. My personal experience has played a part in this as I was once also an under achieving student. Having helpful teachers who motivated me, gave me hope and encouragement to achieve my full potential. I am now a highly motivated student who believes in my own abilities and applies them to achieve success and this is reflected in my GCSE’s and current results.
The care and support I received has strengthened my belief in the value of supporting others.
Especially because when I see other people smiling and improving it reinforces that the efforts of providing support is extremely worthwhile. I will be very grateful for the opportunity to do this with the people and families that I will be working with as a mental health nurse. I have also worked with a 14yr old disabled girl who needed emotional support and help with integrating into the community. I did social activities with her such as: swimming, shopping, going to the park and introduced her to a youth club where I helped her make friends who made her feel accepted. The overall impact improved her
wellbeing.
My interests outside of school such as the acting lessons I take also contributes to the skills I’m am hoping to develop on my nursing course. Through acting I have enhanced my communication skills. I am able to listen carefully and express my ideas clearly and constructively to a group and one to one. My acting classes mean I explore different emotions and look at situations from several different points of view, which develops my empathy and this will be extremely useful in mental health nursing. I also enjoy the team work and working towards a common goal.
Having read the course information and looked through the prospectus I feel that my subjects and interests give me a good grounding to be built on to be successful on the mental health nursing course. i understand that a university degree will require more effort than A-levels and I am committed to putting in the work and enthusiasm needed to achieve my goal of becoming a mental health nurse. I also feel very excited about meeting new people who share interests in mental health nursing as well as people from different backgrounds with different opinions than myself. I’m looking forward to taking part in university life such as joining clubs and the student union. I enjoyed my experience on my school council and taking part in fundraising initiatives and I’m confident I will continue to make a positive impact at university.
