Nursing Home Volunteering
I began volunteering at Morningside House of Laurel since my freshmen year of high school. I normally volunteer on weekends for three hours, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. When I arrive, the residents are cozily relaxed in the warm lounge, where I greet them “good morning.” I walk straight ahead and pass through the double doors to where the early dementia and Alzheimer’s residents are, known as the Memory Lane. Communicating with the early dementia and Alzheimer's residents is difficult due to their immobilities and due to my fear of making them feel uncomfortable. Hence, I took small gradual steps each time. I do activities with them, such as playing volleyball with a balloon. Such activities engages them by refreshing their mind and glistens their face with happiness. Over time, when they became comfortable with my presence, I learned how to communicate effortlessly with them without having to force conversation. Listening to them recite their stories made me realize how much experience they have had and how much I can learn from them. …show more content…
One day, I had completed all my given tasks and I waited in the lounge for my mother to pick me up. I saw a dementia patient who constantly asked the desk clerk if her daughter had called. After the desk clerk tells her that her daughter has not called, the lady sits back down on the sofa for couple minutes and goes back to ask. It was disheartening to witness her asking for her daughter. Nonetheless, volunteering at the Morningside House of Laurel enhanced me as an individual. It provides me with an experience that is unique from other activities I do

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

Our small project focused on the leadership and service pillars. Every other week on Saturday from 1-3, we went to Summerwood of Chanhassen to work with the patients who have dementia. Typically we would run each session by doing activities with them. Each week the activities were different but some included, the alphabet game, memory/brain games, kick ball using a beach ball. Throughout the months, we really started to get to know the patients and connected with them and the patient’s looked forward to us coming. . Personally this experience was very…

I volunteered at Texas Humane Heroes, a local animal welfare organization that gives a homeless dog or cat a chance of finding home. It is a nonprofit organization that benefits from the involvement of volunteers. This was a very unique experience because I got to work with a lot of different volunteers and staff members. There were different volunteering opportunities from foster volunteering to helping out around the place. I helped around the place with other volunteers. We cleaned the dog and cat cages and washed their bowls. It wasn’t fun to pick up their waste, but we got to play with the puppies and the kittens. We also had to greet customers and inform them about the cats and the dogs that they had up there. In the afternoon, we had to walk the dogs. So many volunteers and I, took the dogs out.…

Every Sunday I spend time with the residents of Rosewood Assisted Living, which is a nursing home that specializes in Alzheimer’s disease. I work in the memory care center which is where patients go when they can no longer remember things as simple as there name. It takes patience and some one who excels in kindness to work with them. Some days are harder than others yet I’m never discouraged from returning, because I know that I’m one of the only people who will talk and play three hours of bingo with them. It also give me experience working with mentally ill people. Because one day I hope to become a Pharmaceutical scientist or a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative.…

As I got out of my car and started walking to the front door, all I could do was admire this beautiful building that resembled a ranch-style home. When I walked through the front door, the smell of mashed potatoes, baked chicken breast, and wheat rolls filled my nose; it was as if I was walking into my own grandma’s house. In front of me there was a group of people; some in wheelchairs, some using walkers, and others on the couch shouting out answers to the latest crossword puzzles. Walking through these doors brought me to the realization that I was soon going to learn everything about each one of these people. This included how to specially care for and assist them with their everyday needs in this place that they call their home. I did not…
