Three overarching principles are inherent in every aspect of nursing informatics practice and should be considered by informatics nurses and informatics nurse specialists when addressing the standards of practice , ANA (2007). The informatics nurse:
Incorporates theories, principles, and concepts from appropriate
sciences into informatics practice. Examples of theories could include information, systems, and change theories. Principles and concepts could include project management, implementation methods, workflow analyses, with process redesigns, organizational culture, or database structures.
Integrates ergonomics and human–computer interaction (HCI) principles into informatics solution design, development, selection, implementation, and evaluation.
Systematically determines the social, legal, regulatory and ethical impact of an informatics solution within nursing and health care.
