Aspects of my duties included verbal and physical communication with the residents, which is an important part of developing relationships with them. This perspective really attracts me to nursing and I feel my calm and caring nature is a quality which people can respond to and find comforting. My time working in the care home also taught me how to work well in a team with colleagues and made me appreciate how important it is to follow instructions from senior staff. This recognition will also be a valuable quality as a nurse as it will be necessary for me to realise my role within the group of health professionals and to use my communication skills to work alongside others, to determine what level of care is most beneficial for a patient. As my second work experience location, I chose a butchers so I could ensure that I'm not squeamish and am comfortable around blood. These courses showed me the importance of sanitation and that I am able to remain calm under pressure and maintain my emotional stability. I recognise the relevance of these characteristics within a medical environment and feel they’ll be important in my ability as a nurse.
I have a background in sport, represented my district in competitions and was elected for activities captain at my school. This improved my organisational and communication skills which I believe are ideal for learning about the advantages of team work. To apply these skills and work with children, I volunteered at a local school with primary aged children teaching them netball.
