My first insight into caring for children started as a teaching assistant for a mainstream school caring for a child with cerebral palsy. I also gained experience working in mental health, supporting adults who are acutely unwell in a hospital setting. This role built my strength, confidence and knowledge into the world of nursing, witnessing a patient transform completely from one state of mind to another was truly fascinating. It also showed me the importance of quick decision making, communication and confidence. I began working with a child with an acquired brain injury and epilepsy; this was a whole new experience, learning the importance of empathy, communication and patience was a vital part of my job when dealing with parents and other care professionals. Frequent outpatient visits and short admissions at QMC with my client showed me the resilience, compassion and care the nurses provide to vulnerable, unwell children. I have gained specialist skills within my role including administration of medications, gastrostomy and jejunum care. I have carried out extended roles as eye gaze and communication lead. Children are vulnerable individuals who rely on families and professionals to have their best interests maintained; I thrived
