The Play Inclusion Project (P.I.P) is a charity that runs holiday clubs for children with additional needs of any variety and severity and it is through P.I.P that I believe I have gained invaluable experience and abilities that are necessary in order to become an excellent nurse. In order to become a competent nurse one must be compassionate and caring, I believe …show more content…
myself to be both of these. An example that demonstrates these qualities would be when I was working for the charity there was a young boy that I cared for regularly who suffered from Cerebral Palsy and was physically impaired due to this. Whenever I was assigned to look after him I would make sure to treat him with the utmost care, dignity and respect as you would any child and would not let the challenges of his condition affect the way he was treated or the quality of care that he received. Due to his condition his speech was severely impaired and so I was able to develop my communication skills with him in order to better communicate with him, a skill that is essential to a person working in healthcare. My experience has also made me an incredibly responsible individual, as well as reliable and trustworthy; I would say that, from my time working for P.I.P I have become a confident, determined and kind natured person. My kind natured personality is crucial to me becoming a successful Nurse as children, even more so when they are ill, are timid in the presence of a stranger and so to come across as kind and friendly to them when they are at their most vulnerable is the most important first step in their care.
College, and my work experience, have taught me the value in being hardworking, punctual, and also the importance in the ability to become completely focused on the task at hand.
I believe these qualities are all crucial for a person wanting to become a Children’s Nurse as a Nurse must always work to the best of their ability and be able to focus entirely on the child receiving their care in order to provide the best quality of care to their patient. Studying Biology I was able to develop my abilities to work efficiently both independently and as part of a unit through our laboratory practicals, I believe that it is essential to have these skills as university degrees often involve a large portion of independent study and group work; these skills are essential for a Nurse as they must be able to provide treatment for a child unsupported and also work together with a team when more than one Nurse is required in order to provide
care.
The myriad of stages of development in the womb can encounter an infinite number complications, frequently resulting in a child born with additional needs. Witnessing the effects these illnesses have on both the child and their parents propels me more so to attain the crucial expertise and qualifications required in order to graduate as a Nurse specialising in Special Needs to help alleviate any pain or suffering caused by congenital abnormalities by providing the highest quality healthcare I am able to. I hope that your university will be able to provide me with the opportunity that will allow me to follow this enthralling career path.
