How might you evaluate the credentials and information of people who present themselves as nutrition experts? How do you determine these sources to be credible?
Team C discussed the areas to look at when someone presents himself or herself as a nutrition expert. This is an issue that can be discussed from many views. One aspect to be considered is their credentials. Do they have education? What are their views on medicine? What are their views on holistic health? There really is no right or wrong answer, though there may be the right or wrong “nutrition expert” for an individual. Each person needs to decide their own views in certain areas and find one that lines up with their views.
With the advance of science, research, and information, the understanding on nutrition is contently changing. Along with the rapid changing information, there are a variety of kinds of nutritionists. According to Davis (2010) from Livestrong.com, there are four steps to deciding if a person is a nutrition expert and if that person is fit to be your nutritionist. Step one is to find out if they are registered dietitians. These have the highest respect in the field according to the American Dietetic Association. Step two is to find out their credentials. Where is their degree from, and what is it in? Step three is to look into the company that certified the nutritionist. There are companies that will certify nutritionists with minimal experience in order to produce more numbers. Other companies are much more reliable in producing quality experts. Step four is to ask about their experience in different settings. For example, experience with diabetes or other specific nutritional issues. Many have a well-rounded understanding of nutrition but lack experience. These are some good steps in determining is the “nutrition expert” is one that can be trusted.
