In the State of California, there is currently no freestanding practice act covering dietetics or medical nutrition therapy, as there is in other states. Further, there is no uniform credentialing provision or board of licensure for Registered Dieticians*, such as there are with other health-related professions in the state. This leaves a curious gap in between the legal definitions of the practice of medical dietetics and the practice of nutrition counseling. The small bit of legal language pertaining to the subject can be found in a section in the California Business & Professions Code (2585-2586) that states a Registered Dietician is “… authorized to provide nutritional and dietary counseling, conduct nutritional and dietary assessments, and develop nutritional and dietary treatments including therapeutic diets for individuals or groups.” and their clients “…must be referred by a health care provider who will provide the patient's diagnosis and the desired objective of dietary treatment (statute 2586a)”.…

The dietitian I interviewed was Maria Sakowitz, MS, RD, CLT. For this interview, my main goal was to find out more about the job and how they work with their patients. I learned that she graduated with honors from Rutgers University in 1991. Later on, she went back to schooling and graduated in 2000 from University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. Currently, she is a diabetic educator helping with adult weight loss. She also…

Overall I have enjoyed every aspect of this class. However, I must say that I enjoyed the healthy eating plan assignment. This assignment gave me an overview of my eating habits as a whole. Having to put everything on paper enabled me to acknowledge a change was needed and where the change was needed. Prior to composing a healthy eating plan, I was never equipped with the knowledge to know there were nutrients missing from my daily diet. This particular assignment showed me that I wasn’t absorbing enough fiber daily and that I needed to consume more whole grains, fruits and green vegetables. I’ve also learned that a combination of good nutrition and regular exercise together will assist me in maintaining good health. I also understand the importance of eating a well balanced meal to ensure the recommended amount of daily nutrients is being met.…
