The safe supervision of caring for children in and out of the home is a very important responsibility and should comply with the welfare requirements of the eyfs , as a childminder it is important that I manage the children in my care at all times , making sure I know where they are and I can hear them at all times and I have risk assessments in place and review them to keep them safe , it is also important to keep a register so I know which children were in my care at what times in the event of any problems that may arise. I also need a clean home,
I need to make sure doors / gates ect are secure so children can’t go wandering off as a childminder I also need to think about keeping children safe when out and about eg little ones in pushchair or on reins, learning older ones about road safety / stranger danger ect, children thrive in an environment that is safe for all developmental stages, and making sure there is enough physical space for children to move around and explore.
If I did not do any of the risk assessments or the above the children would suffer and may come to unnecessary harm. An example of a risk assessment I would do would be my kitchen, a safety gate is fitted and is closed when the oven is on to prevent children getting burnt and we also when baking talk about dangers of the oven, another is when visitors are entering my home I will ask them to sign my visitor book when they arrive and leave so parents / myself and ofsted can check who was here when I was looking after the children.
Effective supervision reduces the risks of children coming to harm by preventing accidents and intentional learning environments for children, it is important that I as a childminder risk asses regular and remove hazards , have an up to date first aid certificate and first aid box , I have permission forms from parents for various things eg children using computer , going on
