Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder of the brain and behavior that occurs in two forms, obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are recurring thoughts and emotions which become very distracting and compulsions are a set of behaviors which become rituals that a person feels compelled to perform. Repeating these behaviors are supposed to counteract or diminish the anxiety associated to your obsessions or averts something bad from occurring. However, preforming the compulsion only offers a temporary relief from anxiety of the obsession.…

The person I have chosen to use for this research assignment is a gentleman I will refer to as Randall. He is a 31 year old man with what has been diagnosed as both a General Anxiety Disorder and agoraphobia. Randall’s condition is one that stems from a moment of extreme anxiety in his early twenties, and has worsened over the last decade into the agoraphobic behaviors of having a generalized discomfort or inability to leave the house. In short, Randall cannot be somewhere that does not come with direct access to a restroom facility. He must have a line of sight or awareness of where the closest bathroom is at all times outside his home. These incidents of fear began after a traumatic incident that Randall experienced as a musician nearly ten…
Memoir Analysis: Devil in the Details by J. Traig Mental Illness According to DSM-5 (2017), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by repeated and persistent thoughts called obsessions, which are experienced as imposed and inappropriate and which cause intense feelings of anxiety and discomfort. In order to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessive thoughts, the person with OCD performs repetitive behaviors called compulsions. Most often those two symptoms present together although obsessive thoughts without compulsions may exist , but more likely there will be multiple obsessions with corresponding compulsions. DSM-5 (2017) provides several diagnostic criteria for OCD, the first one being “Presence of obsessions, compulsions,…

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder” the authors Hannah C. Levy, Carmen P. McLean, Elna Yadin, and Edna B. Foa had 2 aims for their study: first, to describe the characteristics of people looking for treatment for OCD; and second, to compare the characteristics of individuals who sought out treatment and those who did not. For this study the researchers used participants that contacted an anxiety disorder clinic, all of these people completed a phone screen test. During this phone screen test, the researchers excluded participants that exhibited symptoms other than those of obsessive compulsive disorder. The majority of the participants in this study are female, ranging in age from 18 to 80.…
OCD is obsession with orderliness, perfection, and control (Rathus, 2010). Crawford shows many actions that seem to be obsessive. A normal obsession of people with this disorder is time. During Christina’s fifth birthday party, Joan kept insisting that it was time to open presents against the photographers wishes. She becomes openly upset when her schedule isn’t kept. Another common obsession is cleanliness. Joan’s incident with this occurs at Christina’s birthday party also. When they finally get to presents, Christina discovers a grass stain on her dress. When she tells her mom, Joan immediately wants to go into the house and fix it before pictures. When the photographers keep telling her that it’s fine, she lets it go but not without a dirty glance. These two instances show obsessive-compulsive disorder because it displays her need to keep things orderly. She wanted to keep to a specific schedule and not change it, and she also wants to make sure things are kept to the way she likes it, like the cleanliness of her daughter’s clothing. Joan proves that she has OCD because her persistence of keeping things the way she likes…
Chronic conditions are one of the leading causes for death and disability. You may have heard about these conditions such as ADD, ADHD, OCD, etc., but are you aware of the social burdens they can have on their victims? Most people are not affected by chronic conditions in their own lives, and do not take into consideration the day-to-day struggle and constant battle being faced by others who do have them. It is a common misconception that people with OCD are just germ freaks or they are obsessed with one action such as not stepping on cracks in the sidewalk. Neil Hilborn is a poet who showcased his OCD through spoken poetry at the Rustbelt Regional…

The poets have recited in their own gestures and tones with different types of emotion to deliver the message to their audience. In Neil Hilborn’s “OCD,” Hilborn expresses himself of how it is like to live with having obsessive-compulsive disorder. With the disorder he lives with he shows how much it affected him. First he went from being obsess with objects to falling in-love with a girl. So, the way he shows his emotion to the audience is furious throughout the whole way. Hilborn expresses himself this way to show how his obsessive-compulsive disorder has affected his love for her. For example, when he says "She told me she shouldn't have let me get attached to her, that this whole thing was a mistake, but how can it be…
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a potentially disabling condition that can persist throughout a person 's life. An individual who suffers from OCD becomes trapped in a pattern of repetitive thoughts and behaviors that are irrational and upsetting but extremely difficult to overcome. OCD occurs in a spectrum from mild to severe, but if a severe case goes untreated, it can destroy a person 's ability to function at work, school, or even in the home. In OCD, it is as though the brain gets stuck on a particular thought or urge and just can 't let go. My research will focus on three main aspects of Obsessive-compulsive disorder: 1) What causes it, 2) What are the symptoms, and 3) What are the treatments that can curb its sometimes debilitating effects.…
By a show of hands, how many of you know someone who has asthma? How many of you know someone who has diabetes? Now how many of you know someone who has obsessive-compulsive disorder? Not many. Yet OCD is diagnosed nearly as often as asthma and diabetes. It’s estimated that 2.2 million American adults have obsessive-compulsive disorder. This is slightly more than the number of people who reside in Houston, Texas, the 4th largest city in the country. And according to the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation, people go an average of 17 years between the time OCD symptoms begin and the time they begin treatment. As someone who has OCD, I’d like to talk to you about what obsessive-compulsive disorder is, what some common symptoms are, what causes…
Based on what I have read about Karen Rusa, I have concluded that she has obsessive-compulsive personality disorder which is commonly known as OCD. Karen behaves this type of behaviour mainly to prevent a situation she dreads of happening which involves her children. These thoughts are unrealistic, unreasonable, and excessive. Her obsessions and compulsions are time consuming and affect Karen’s routine and her relationship with her family. This is concluded from the example in the paragraph which gives an example of when Karen goes grocery shopping and chooses an item on the shelf. Another example that was given is how Karen is urged or compelled to have four coffees or cigarettes because of her unrealistic fear of something happening to her…
