Obesity is a major health hazard all over the world. Although, smoking is the number one cause of death in America, obesity is rapidly catching up. More than thirty percent of Americans suffer from obesity. Today I am going to explain the major effects of obesity, discuss the risk factors that can be controlled and not controlled, and the treatment options that you have. Anyone can suffer from obesity. It can come from the type of lifestyle you live and it also can be genetic. These adolescents have a greater increased risk of dying from heart disease. The gains are coming at a high cost. From 1997 to 2007, inpatient cardiovascular operations and procedures increased 27 percent. The estimated cost of heart disease and stroke in 2007 was $286 billion. For women, heart attacks kill six times as many as breast cancer (Schoenstant, MD, 2009). Medical studies have shown that obese people have higher blood pressure then people that are not obese. Many medical studies have shown that obesity presented an increase in the cardiac output and the blood volume, and in the arterial resistance. In fact, obesity induces a high secretion of insulin in trying to decrease the excessive sugar concentration in the blood (Schoenstant, MD, 2009). This insulin secretion is very high compared to a non-obese subject. Many obese people will have their gallbladders removed because of gallbladder disease or always getting gallstones (2011). Sleep apnea is a disorder in which one's airway becomes obstructed while asleep, causing loud snoring in its most benign form to a complete cessation of breathing, cardiac arrhythmias and low blood oxygen levels at its worst. It is believed that the airway of the obese individual becomes obstructed by large tonsils, enlarged tongue and increased fat in the neck, all pressing on the airway when the throat muscles are relaxed with sleep (2011). There have been many treatments and procedures throughout the years offered to overweight people. Exercise videos, over the counter diet pills, prescription diet pills, weight loss programs, gyms, and surgery. Many people will use liposuction which is the easiest because a doctor can just go in and suck out the fat but not many people can this procedure and it is not covered by insurance companies.
