The bi-monthly meeting began promptly at 6:30 P.M., 30 minutes earlier than usual, as the mayor and city council members filed into their seats. Culver city constituents, local police and fire officials and three prominent figures in the disabled community attended the meeting. The reason for the early start to the meeting was the proclamation of October as Disability Awareness month and the recognition of one two individuals and one non-profit organization for their impactful work within the disabled community.
According to Vice Mayor, Jeffrey Cooper, “The city of Culver City strives to promote awareness and understanding of the needs, potential and abilities of our neighbors, friends and coworkers with disabilities.” …show more content…
According to date collected by Culver City Disability Services, the city has created 2000 curb cuts, audible traffic signals at 30 intersections and all city buildings are accessible with the addition of ramps and automatic doors. The national census for Culver City states that 5 percent of citizens 65-years-old and younger have a disability. Approximately 1,956 people out of the total population of 39, 717 people have a disability; a large percentage is children and young adults.
Maria Lopez, 18, was one of three recipients of awards distributed Monday night. Lopez has selflessly dedicated her time to the non-profit service organization LA Goal, which has resulted in her blossoming passion for activism.
