Odysseus vs Oedipus
Pride is one of the seven deadly sins. Its effect on people, however, is often subtle at the start and hard to detect. Most proud people will never consider themselves to be truly proud until they come face to face with the consequences of their pride. Sophocles and Shakespeare both address this dilemma in their plays Oedipus and Othello. Through their nobility, their tragic flaws, the fall these flaws cause, and the suffering and wisdom they derive from these falls, Oedipus and Othello reveal the true character of the tragic hero and show the devastating consequences of pride.

Both Oedipus and Othello are distinguished by nobility: Oedipus by birth and deed and Othello by a distinguished career. Oedipus is the son of King Laius and Jocasta his wife, the king and queen of Thebes. Because of an oracle prophesying that King Laius will be murdered by his son, Oedipus is left to die in "the mountains where Cithaeron is"(1472). He is then rescued by a shepherd and raised by "Polybus. . . king of Corinth/and Merope, the Dorian" (834-35). Not only is Oedipus noble in his birth and upbringing, he is also noble in deed. Upon coming to Thebes as a young man, Oedipus answers the riddle of the Sphinx, who is terrorizing the citizens, and rids the city of this monster. In turn he is made King of Thebes and marries, unknowingly, his mother, the queen. Othello, on the other hand, is noble only by deed. He is a Moor and a barbarian by Venetian customs. He is an outsider, yet he is accepted by the Venetian people because of his distinguished career as general of the Venetian army. In defense of his lack of noble heritage, Othello asserts: "I fetch my life and being / From men of royal siege" (1.2.20-21). It is his rank that makes him noble. His contemporaries also praise him as "brave Othello" (2.1.37), and they declare that he "commands / Like a full soldier" (2.1.35-36). Oedipus and Othello have the nobility that a true tragic hero must have, yet this nobility is only the

In The Odyssey written by Homer and translated by Richard Lattimore, several themes are made evident, conceived by the nature of the time period, and customs of the Greek people. These molded and shaped the actual flow of events and outcomes of the poem. Beliefs of this characteristic were represented by the sheer reverence towards the gods and the humanities the Greek society exhibited, and are both deeply rooted within the story.…

As children, many people are told to take pride in themselves. Parents remind them to be prideful of their work, heritage, accomplishments, and goals. When kids get older, most are continuously reminded that they need to be confident. However, few are informed that this pride can bite. While confidence isn’t a killer, too much never leads to anything good. Pride allows many needless sins. Four books, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, share this theme. Each book tells the same prideful and destructive story in a different way.…

Pride has forever been seen as a negative characteristic. In the Holy Bible, it is seen as a characteristic of the devil. The devil 's pride led him to the desire to be more powerful than God. As a result, he was expelled from the holy kingdom and sentenced to live among society. That has been a tragedy for humanity because the devil brought all of his evil with him and spread it among the living. It was God 's will to expel him from the heavens and it is now the will of society whether to live as proud as the devil. A character of pride is a person that is arrogant and too stubborn to understand reasoning, so to speak. In the plays Oedipus Rex and Antigone by Sophocles, similar scenarios are present in the way that there are those characters who live with pride and try to prevent the wills of the gods. The one difference in these two plays is that the main characters are of the opposite sex, which readers may conclude…

Homer’s Odysseus and Sophocles’ Oedipus look quite similar on the surface. They are both noble and well respected kings and share a flaw, hubris, but that is as far as their similarities go. Odysseus is the classic epic hero while Oedipus is the classic tragic hero. What that means is Odysseus will go on a quest, face great trouble, but will be able to defeat it with the help of the gods and eventually have a happy ending. He may have a flaw, but that flaw will not do much damage. On the other hand, Oedipus will have a flaw and that flaw will cause his downfall. A tragic hero is also misfortuned and may even be cursed by the gods as Oedipus is cursed by Apollo. In addition to their heroic types, fate has a strong role in each of their stories…

Both King Oedipus & Othello are well regarded by society. King Oedipus is well regarded by the society of Thebes because he saved them from the Sphinx by solving the riddle. When Thebes is hit with the plague the citizens all come to King Oedipus because they believe that he will be able to save them once again. King Oedipus is also respected by the community because he is openly concerned for the people of Thebes. 'I grieve for you, my children. Believe me, I know.´ Othello is also well respected as he is the General in the Venetian Army. Othello is well respected as he is polite, 'My very noble and approved good masters,' courageous, 'valiant Moor,' as he is referred to by the senator and also fascinating, 'She loved me for the dangers I had passed,' when Othello is referring to the stories about himself. He feels that he is just as important as anyone else in Venetian society and deserves the respect he is given, 'as proud a fortune as this that I have reached.' While King Oedipus is respected by the whole community of Thebes there are people who do not respect Othello such as Iago who described Othello as 'an old black ram' and Roderigo who referenced him as a 'lascivious Moor.' The references made by these two characters are referring to his colour and…

First we look at Oedipus behaviors at the beginning, we can see that he was an amazing person, worrying for his people. “Tell me, and never doubt that I will help you in every way I can…” (line 13, 863) Oedipus was a very carrying king; he cared for Thebes and his people with unconditional love. When he was exiled from his beloved city, he did it by choice, but the fact that he left in order for the plague to vanish shows his leadership qualities. The part in the play was very sad and heartbreaken because Oedipus leaves the city in which he ruled and saved from the sphinx.
