Everyone has had to face challenges, well if some haven’t they will. Some people might have it easier than others but Mawi had it the hard way. At a young age his family had to go through hard times and a big change had to happen. In the novel Of Beetles & Angels Mawi Asgedom tells the audience about his story of coming to the United States, where Mawi lost his loved ones but gained courage and commitment which motivated him to become a top student at his high school and graduate Harvard.
Mawi Asgedom was a little boy living in Africa fighting of snakes, diseases, thieves, and even wild animals. But after a war had erupted his family had to flee and become refugees. Soon after the Asgedom family had to come
to United States and start a brand new chapter of their life. Their ticket was to Wheaton, Illinois, there they got a small apartment and then soon after Haileab became a janitor and the kids went to school. However the kids were always getting bullied and picked on, but they fought back until they got too old to fight so they had to accept the harassment.
High school years were really tough for Mawi. Tewolde his brother, passed away while hit by a drunk driver. This took a toll on Mawi, Mawi gave up on school and couldn’t get over the tragedy. Soon after Mawi had realised that one thing Tewolde always wanted for Mawi is success in school. Without hesitating Mawi went back to working hard and focusing on school and studying for tests in-order to improve his grades.
It was now the school break, but there were still more final exams to do, and Mawi had an A- which he couldn’t stand and he wanted to improve it. So instead of spending time with family and going out to parties with friends he stayed home the entire break to study and ace every final coming up. He did it, he got a high percentage on the test and he bumped up his grade to a solid A. After having such good grades Mawi was encouraged to apply for a scholarship at colleges that he never thought would even consider him. Being encouraged by his counselor and family he applied for Harvard which accepted him with a full tuition scholarship, soon after Mawi was graduating college and starting a new chapter in his life.
Finally it is important to never give up on your goals and always remember to keep working in-order to achieve what you want. In this situation Mawi had rough times growing up and doing what’s right everyday while being picked on. Some might see it differently than other but in the end you should never give up and always keep your head up.
