The two main characters in the novella, George and Lennie, are two genuinely opposed people, but however, they still love and care for one another. “‘But not us." Lennie broke in. "But not us! An' why? ‘Because... because I got you to look after me, and you got me …show more content…
to look after you, and that's why’" (Steinbeck 14). Both men are more successful than other men, they have each other to work and help out with. They have both someone to keep them company. Without company, both men would be lonely and wouldn’t act the way that they do when they have each other. If they didn’t have each other, then they both would be miserable and have no idea where they are going in life. In addition to having someone to look after and to have them look after yourself, it is likely that without friendship people become unbalanced.
People start acting touchy along with becoming irritable while they have no one to hang out with. This results in becoming a rude and angry person. “I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain’t no good. They don’t have no fun. After a long time they get mean. They get wantin’ to fight all the time” (Steinbeck 41). It is easier when you have someone to talk to. You can share stuff with them and tell them secrets. Without that relationship, a person can become someone that no one likes or tolerates. You need a healthy friendship to stay out of trouble and to not become a lonely lug that doesn’t do anything. For instance, people become estranged when they have no one to associate with.
When you don’t have people to hang around with or talk to, then you end up going delirious and start becoming lonely.
“A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long’s he’s with you. I tell ya,” he cried, “I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick” (Steinbeck 80). It doesn’t matter who you have around with you, the only thing that matters is that you have a friend and someone to do activities with. Without friendship, people become delusional and deranged. Friendships keep you healthy and sane throughout life and give you something to look forward to.
Friendship is the utmost significant gift to have in your life. John Steinbeck shows that in Of Mice and Men. Without friendship and companionship, people become destructive, lonely, and even sometimes unhinged. It is only a matter of time before you lose your mind. Friendship is one of the most important goods in life and everyone needs it to be a better person and to live a worthy life. There is nothing better than having someone to confide in and disclose your darkest secrets with. George and Lennie show that no matter how annoying or disobeying your friend is, they still love one
another.
