Official crime figures (OCF) are essentially figures which have been extracted from a set of data and allow people make informed decisions. Analysis allows for the identification of changes over time and plan and prepare for possible events in the future. They provide insight into crime and stimulates thinking and debate as to the manifestation of such crime.
There are a number of different ‘stakeholders’ who use OCF. AGS use these figures as a valuable management information tool in terms of policy evaluation and operational and strategic decision-making processes. Decisions are made based on monthly and annual figures and comparisons are made. These figures are also used for the formulation of specific AGS initiatives such as the policing of public order or a particular type of crime which is of great concern. These initiatives are then assessed to determine the outcomes. Specific performance indicators are used, such as measures of violent crimes, public order offences, vehicle related crimes or incidence per head of population and the official crime figures relate to these indicators. An example of one such initiative is the establishment of Operation THOR.

The general public play an important role in crime prevention initiatives such as Community Alert and Neighbourhood watch so it is important to keep them updated.
