Summary-Response for “Biotech Century: Playing Ecological Roulette with Mother Nature’s Designs”
Summary: In “Biotech Century”, the author Jeremy Rifkin’s story was about the dangers of lost identity. Jeremy fears that one biotechnical processes are loosed they may be irreversible. Jeremy explains the problems that we could run into with science and new technology. Human beings do not control anything anymore nor does nature, science does. As the population grows, the food is not enough as it was before. Since the food supply is not as high as it was, scientists are trying to figure out how to produce more of it. Scientist’s are using so many harmful chemicals to do these kinds of things that we do not even know about. Human beings have been remaking the earth for a long time, but since science and technology has become so advanced, human beings are like guests now trying to figure out life.
Response: I did not like this story at all. I had to read the story multiple times and get my boyfriend to read it just so that I could understand it. After reading it a bunch of times, I finally got the main idea about it. I do not believe that science should be creating things to help the world. I really do think that things should be natural because not only would it be better for us, but also it would be better for our environment. By doing this, this could create very dangerous health effects. In my biology class my professor was talking about how doctors can choose the gender, eye color, and hair color of an unborn child. How and why is this possible? Why can parents request to have a certain kind of looking child, why can’t they be happy with what they have and it be natural. Also could it cause health problems down the road for the family? I just do not see any point in doing this. Another huge problem is the obesity in our world. We talk about how bad it is and how it is getting worse
