Oil Valuation
Oil & Gas Valuation – Quick Reference http://breakingintowallstreet.com

Oil & Gas Valuation: Comparable Public Companies & Precedent Transactions Picking a set of comparable companies or precedent transactions for an oil & gas company is very similar to how you would pick them for any other company – here are the differences: 1. Rather than cutting the set by revenue or EBITDA, you would instead select the set based on Proved
Reserves or Daily Production (in addition to the normal geographic and industry criteria).
2. Instead of traditional metrics like revenue or EPS, you list the metrics and multiples that are relevant to an energy company: EBITDAX, Proved Reserves, Daily Production, the Oil Mix %, and so on. Please see the previous handout in this course on Oil & Gas Key Metrics to see the full list and to learn how to calculate these metrics and multiples. Liquidity, solvency, and profitability are the three characteristics that will be used to see a company’s success. A simple financial statement will not demonstrate the company’s power because it is a general idea of the company’s position and does not display business developments. The company’s business developments are vital for potential investors because they determine vertical and horizontal analysis. These characteristics are also used to define the ratio analysis. Ratio analysis is dividing two numbers to get a number of percentages that can be used to compare companies in the same industry. Examining the entire company’s financial trends for a set period of time, an investor will see a factual description of the company’s financial condition. This is the financial analysis an investor desires to review prior to spending money.…

The key economic driver for the Oil Drilling & Gas Extraction Industry, crude oil prices, determines much of its profitability according to supply and demand. Price trends in West Texas Intermediate, a grade of crude oil used as a benchmark in oil pricing, display the growth of its value in the past 3 years and past decade. An average barrel of crude oil grew from $26.18 in 2002 to $61.95 in 2009, $79.48 in 2010, and $94.87 in 2011 (Airlines, 2012). JP Morgan analysts project average annual prices above $99 in upcoming years (Sethuraman, 2012). Such upward growth points to lucrative profits.…
