Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga said at an annual ceremony that marked the end of the Battle of Okinawa that "Crime and accidents have been repeated for years because of U.S.
military bases occupying vast areas (on the island).” Many natives are in shock and feel very unsafe because this recent event was so
inhumane. The U.S. military went on record to say that “The crime rate among its ranks in Japan is lower than among the general public.” There will be no 4th of July fireworks for American troops stationed in Japan this year to show respect for the Okinawan residents, although barbecues, sporting events and other community activities are still being planned at bases to share the traditions for celebrating American independence. I personally believe the U.S. presence in Okinawa will never leave due to the strategic presence it has against China and neighboring countries. They believe that the bases are intended to deter countries that would attack other nations, seek to seize land territory, or dominate seas and airspace that are either internationally global or owned by somebody else.
