There is absolutely nothing wrong with an athlete exuding confidence, which is often one of those intangibles that separate the great ones from the bad ones. For running back Arian Foster of the Houston Texans, the confidence he currently shows has more to do with personal growth that it does with anything he is currently able to do on the field.…

Getting older can bring new challenges to life. Challenges that most will never fully understand until personally experienced. What we once were able to do gracefully now nrequires assistanvce. The mere presence of black men contain the power to invoke awe, discomfort and intimidation. This power, however, does not justify the grossly apologetic attitude and extreme behavior modification that Brent Staples exercised for the simple purpose of alleviating the fears and suspicions aroused by the presence of a black man. Brent says he smothered the rage that surely would have turned to madness, he kept a wide distance from people on subways who appeared to be nervous especially during the wee hours, and even moreso if he had changed from professional attire into jeans. Brent, in his own words, allowed people to walk by so he didn't appear to be following them. In my opinion, this is overkill to accommodate the expectations and assuage the racially sterotypic and unrealistic suspicions of others.…
Uncle Tungsten, by Oliver Sacks is titled as “Memories of a Chemical Boyhood”, but it is far more than that. This story is not just a biography of a kid’s childhood, it’s focused around the influence of chemistry upon a child’s life, the discovery of the periodic table and the elements on it, and the non-chemistry part of his life. Early in the story, we learn that Oliver Sacks, the child in the story, has a family full of chemists, physicists, and doctors. As of this, he was exposed to boatloads of information about chemistry and was able to use any chemical of his choosing. He made good use of his newfound hobby, and he had acquired a home chemistry lab (fume hood and all), where he experimented with everything…

Literature can show either developmentalist or declinist views on Aging in the way in which the author talks of Aging, or for example the way the author portrays ones Aging experience. While an author with declinist views may paint themselves or an elderly character out to fit the classic decaying, weak stereotype, authors whom possess developmentalist views will instead paint the aging journey out to be one of growth or beauty. Author May Sarton displays this developmental view in her At Seventy: A Journal (1987). One example of these developmental views can be found when Sarton (1987) writes, “ I suppose real old age begins when one looks backward... but I look forward to the years ahead” (p. 5). While a declinist may write that they dread…

Rabbi Johnson Sacks, attempts to explain the “two stories” that separate mankind: science and religion. Instead of merely mocking or denouncing science, he is able to explain how both science and religion can co-exist, which is an idea most religious and nonreligious individuals cannot grasp. Human beings need both science and religion in order to understand the physical world in which humans reside and explain their existence. I completely agree with Sacks explanation on how science and religion intertwined.…
The story, Harrison Bergeron, was written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and published in October, 1961. Harrison Bergeron was written in 3rd person omniscient, but the narrator does not know everything about anybody. The author states, “ “Yup,” said George. He tried to think a little about the ballerinas.” This quote is saying what George is thinking. Another example is after Harrison and the ballerina got shot by Diana Moon Glampers and then the television tube burned out. Kurt says “Hazel turned to comment about the blackout to George. But George had gone out into the kitchen for a can of beer.” This means that the narrator knows what Hazel was going to do, but decided not to. The last example is when George started thinking about his 14 year old…
