With having a portion of older adults in the nursing home, who can be the one person they can trust? The person who these older adults look for when an issue or a conflict needs to be solved is an ombudsman. Ombudsman is defined as advocates for residents of nursing homes, board and care homes, and assisted living facilities (“Nursing Home,” 2016). Many people now only use care facilities i.e. agencies, residential or nursing homes as a last resort as they have concerns about the quality of the care for their relative. They find that trusting these places to provide good care is hard, even though there is high need for this, this is because the public have lost respect in the system and would rather have their relatives cared for at home where they can keep a close eye on the care being given, or even care for them themselves. They feel angry and disgusted because they should be able to trust in the care system, but still there are reports of abuse.…

Genesis Healthcare, nursing home is located in many states and has just purchased the manor that I work at this last year, so many changes have happened along with new code of ethics being brought to our attention. I have received their compliance program manual recently and am still learning what they expect of their employees and management. I have been employed with them since February 2012 and enjoy working there. The mission statement for them is “We improve the lives we touch through the delivery of high quality health care and everyday compassion.” They are committed in providing their residents with the highest quality of caring for their medical needs as well as providing services with the highest ethical, business, and loyal standards. These standards include not only the residents, but healthcare providers, companies that they do business with, state regulations that they report to and the public and private people that seek their services. This means that they expect all their employees to follow all legal rules and regulations and to use ethical decisions in all situations they may be presented with. Their core belief is that the residents are their center of their work. Their employees are the vital link between Genesis Health Care and their patients and residents. The Core Values are as…

I interviewed a county worker with in-home supportive services. Mr. Rosen has been an advocate for years because his mother was mistreated in a home for the disabled. The support of the elderly provided by In-home supportive sources has allowed Mr. Rosen to keep his mother in the home and know that when he is gone at work she is cared for. As an advocate for the agency Mr. Rosen educates the public about knowing the signs of abuse the elderly face and speaking out against abuse. Mr. Rosen is an advocate for those who have no voice by continuously improving the standards of care givers and their responsibilities reporting a crime. Mr. Rosen explains that many of the elderly are neglected, can be taken advantage of, and mistreated by family or relatives. Caregivers have the knowhow and experience to detect abuse and put a stop to the cruelty.…

Substandard quality of health care is duly recognized as a major form of medical crises with potential to jeopardize the functioning and purpose of the American health care system. Whereas on the one hand medical costs of treatment are rising, on the other malpractices and non compliance on the part of medical professionals and institutions compounds the problem and seriously questions the quality of health care being provided to citizens. However, before proceeding further it is important to understand what is exactly meant by the substandard quality of care. The substandard quality of care implies that one or more of the requirements mandatory under the federal regulations 42 CFR 483 .13 involving resident behavior and facility practices, 42CFR .15 involving quality of life or 42CFR 483 .25 regarding quality of care are not complied with leading to actual jeopardy to the resident health or safety or having potential for causing more than minimal harm (HealthCare information, 2007). Any nursing home found with delivering substandard quality of healthcare or carrying significant deficiencies in its healthcare treatment plans would be required to immediately address the issue.…

You trust nursing homes to treat your loved ones with quality care, but what could happen behind closed doors still causes anxiety. In 1986, these fears came to fruition when Congress requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) evaluate the quality of nursing homes. They found that a majority of residents were often neglected, abused, and inadequately cared for. To solve these issues, the IOM proposed a series of reforms that were brought into action the following year — known as the Nursing Home Reform Act.…
