On a Christmas Eve. Nora Helmer walks into the apartment with gifts and a Christmas tree. She paid the porter double what he asked for and she was eating macaroons. Her husband, Torvald Helmer, comes out of his study calling Nora his skylark and his squirrel. Nora tells Torvald that she wants to show him what she has purchased, and Torvald jokes with her for being a spendthrift.
