They then call their grandparents in Brooklyn, and ask to come home because this was not the trip they expected, they grandmother refuses. The girls stick around and find themselves actually having fun, they one day are at a Chinese restaurant getting takeout, with their moms money, and see an African American with an afro, and kind of scary looking, as described in the book, they then realize it is a Black Panther. Black Panthers were a gang in Oakland California, who were there to protect the African Americans, they also would always try and create community based programs for the African American children to have something to do during the summer, or maybe even after school. The three little girls start going to a free breakfast which after words has a summer camp, which they end up going to that is held by black panthers. The girls soon become closer with their mom than at the beginning, and figure out that she writes poems, and her poet name is Nzila, she once wrote a poem named “I Birthed a Nation”. Towards the end of the summer the summer camp is having a talent show/ recital, the girls have entered and don't really
