A Summers Life
1. The one aspect of Soto's life that was most interesting is when he had the three chicks. Soto had three chicks in his back yard that he was raising. He seemed fascinated by the way they just pecked around his back yard, blinked rapidly, and slept standing up. The chicks used to crawl on his shoes. He thought it was cute until one of the chicks defecated on his shoe. That angered Gary and he kicked sand in the chicks eyes. He immediately felt bad after what he had just done. This is the part of the story that made me laugh. It made me laugh because as the chapter went on, Gary became very protective of the chicks. When he kicked sand in the chicks eyes, it was very alarming. He seemed not to be a violent person.
2. The haircut chapter was the closest to my childhood: “Wow I did that too”. When Reinhardt cut Soto's hair, I cut my sister's hair in the same fashion. Soto's hair was different then my sister's. Soto has short black hair; my sister had shoulder length, curly, blond hair. When my mother found out about my sister's haircut, my mother's reaction was far different then Soto's. My mother, a hard nosed woman from Kentucky, ordered my to the tree to get a switch to receive my punishment. My Mother was not as lenient. Soto’s Mother just asked what happened and told him to metr here in the backyard later in the day. My mother had to take my sister to the salon to fix her hair. Soto's mother took him to the back y ard to fix it herself.
3. The moral of the Pie Chapter is not to steal. Soto knew right from wrong when he walked into the German market with his Frisbee. He knew he was going to put the pie under his Frisbee. He was fighting the urge not to steal the pie. He could taste the pie in his mouth while he was standing there. When he did, he had no intention of sharing the pie with anybody. His buddy Johnny asked Soto for a piece and he told him to get away. He ate the whole pie by himself. After he ate the pie and the day ended, he felt guilty. The

To start the writer portrays to the reader his personal morals in a religious aspect by using a paradox. He describes himself as “holy in almost every bone.” Soto coordinates the ideas of him being nearly innocent with the fact that he still has demons that creep up on him. To bring to life the sin he is faced with, the author uses personification. As he is standing in front of the pies he states, “and my dear, fat-faced chocolate was always a good bet.” He gazes over each diverse pastry like as if he was gazing over different sins and deciding which one looks the most enticing.…

    Gary Soto's "The Pie"

    • 578 Words

To begin with, Soto thoroughly describes his feelings before and during the process of stealing the pie through metaphors and allusion. He states that he steals the pie out of boredom and quotes that "I stood before a rack of pies...and the juice of guilt wetting my underarms". This metaphor indicates that deep within his conscience, Soto struggles between his strict morals and his wild impulse to steal. Through the clever use of the metaphor, Soto compares the sweat from his nervousness to the "juice of guilt", thus implying that even after he has confirmed his decision he still feels morally unjustified. Soto emphasizes his guilty conscience by commenting on the biblical allusion of Eve and the snake. He comments "what scared me...was being thirsty for the rest of my life". Soto draws a connection between the apple the snake offers to Eve and the stolen apple pie. The allusion dramatizes the event from a petty theft to a sin that changed the fate of mankind. This comparison reflects the seriousness with which Soto views his crime and the consequences that can result from it.…

In the Running of Bulls flashbacks were heavily used to show the personal history of each character. This interesting style of writing also shows the intricacy between the relationships of each character while staying very simple to comprehend. Equally as interesting as the style of writing in this short story, is identifying the many background settings that compare or depict Don Miguel de la Mendoza’s dark emotions toward Teresa and Carlito. The settings in this short story have a lot to do with associating and symbolizing Mendoza. Not only do the settings symbolize Mendoza’s evil inner thoughts and emotions but also the objects that surround him. The story as whole is built upon the betrayal and infidelity that Teresa and Carlito brought upon Mendoza.…

    Summer Ventures

If a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, then Summer Ventures was a leap. The closest I have ever gotten to actually living a college life was when I went to Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics for four weeks in the summer of my sophomore year. My experience at Summer Ventures was truly an un-forgetful one. Not only did I meet new friends and enjoyed my stay at East Carolina University, taking part in Summer Ventures made me realize that college is the right step for me after high school. I see myself engaging in the environment of the college life and going to classes in the morning and reporting to the dorms before curfew as I did during Summer Ventures. I was used to my mom doing my laundry and changing my bed sheets, but after I went to Summer Ventures I gained a sense to independence, responsibility, and maturity. I learned to take care of myself without my mom and dad always being around. I learned to set an alarm and wake myself up, instead of having my dad wake me up every morning. Time management was the most important thing I learned. The camp wasn’t just fun and games of the college life; I also had to go to classes in the morning. After classes I had to plan out when I was going to study for the class and what time I should take out from the day to work on project and get stuff done at the library. I learned that time is the most important thing that a student has. If you are out of time or if you waste your time, you won’t be able to get that precious time back. I learned to do things myself, and to my surprise, I actually enjoyed taking care of myself and being independent. I would love to do this for the next four years after high school when I’m off to college. Summer Ventures not only confirmed my ambition of going to college but also helped my come out of my bubble. I got out of my comfort zone and talked to new people and made some great friendships that I still cherish to this…

Summers in a revival tent are not what dreams are made but they are most of my childhood memories. I say summer but really it was spring, fall, and sometimes the first part of winter too. My siblings and I had a part in most every detail of the revival. We would help set the tent, set out the chairs, and get the sound system ready. My brother and I also sang. After the service we would take everything inside down and prepare for the next night. When that revival would end we would head to the next town. My summers were rarely sports and relaxation, but they were always faith and…

In the dystopian story, “All Summer in a Day,” by Ray Bradbury, it focuses on a girl named Margot who recently moved to Venus from Earth. Through this transition on the new planet, she discovers that the sun only comes out and is visible every seven years. There are several other children who live there, and who are between the ages of 9, meaning the last time they saw the Sun was when they were 2 years old. Disheartened Margot who had been living under the Sun for several years makes no effort to try to adapt to the new environment, as she is filled with sorrow about not being able to see the Sun. As a result, she does not socialize with the other children, as she can only remark about the Sun, making them feel jealous, and Margot being singled…

    One Summer Night

One Summer Night, written by Ambrose Bierce, is a satirical story which involves a presumably dead man, Henry Armstrong, who was in fact comatose, being ironically killed by the shady caretaker of the graveyard. Irony is a recurring literary device in many of Bierce’s short stories and books, reflective of his time period where satire and sarcasm in stories was popular. Bierce is quite known for his similarities in plot outlines in his literature. In his most famous short story, An Occurrence at Owl Bridge, a prisoner who had escaped his hanging was finally free when the storyline takes a turn; as it turns out, he was dead the whole time and a great portion of the story was really the last moments of activity in his dying brain.…

Every story has a clever theme that is dispersed throughout to educate the readers of main issues in our world today. One substantial example of this is Ray Bradbury's story, “All Summer In a Day”. In this story, young Margot from planet Earth tries to adapt to life on Venus, but there are roadblocks in her path that prevent her from having a decent time, which are her classmates. Each and every one of them made sure that Margot would suffer the pain they went through: not being able to see the sun. While Margot lived on Earth for four years and got to experience the bright and beautiful sun, her classmates have lived on Venus for their whole lives, and could barely recall the time where they saw this rare event occur. Furthermore, the classmates…

[Can you help me come up with a hook for this story?] Summer is a great time of the year for every person younger than eighteen because it is a time of year you have little to no responsibilities. You can sleep in, relax, hang out with friends or just do whatever you want all summer long. These are the reasons I love summer. My summer this year has been great because there was always something to do, whether it was playing games, to going to seeing a movie, to hanging out with friends.…
