The Internet provides a virtual space for users to converse, overcoming the limitations of distance, as well as the conditions of time. The convenient for connecting through the Internet is obvious. However, opposite sides claim that visible weaknesses exists in online communication. According to Cavanagh (2007), Internet users attend less social activities, feeling loneliness and frustration and reducing contact with their neighbours. Moreover, Kurtzberg (2005) and his team completed an experiment, showing even acquaintances get negative results in online communication in daily life. However, the previous research rarely concentrated on specific aspects in building relationship through online communication. This article will focus on problems in building close relationship among citizens by online communication. It starts from analysing difficult conditions in building emotional ties, following by tough situation in maintaining relationship. Then, a special kind of community is analysed about establishing intimate connection and solutions are discussed.
There are numbers of software which were invented for communication on the Internet, but personal relationships are still not easy to build. One of the shortages of talking through the Internet is that misunderstandings frequently occur without body language. With the limitation of geographic distance, body language could not be entirely transferred by computers between citizens in their daily lives. Janne and Karen (2009), claims that distance could result in unceremonious behavior, for less cues and attitude information could be found in simple vocabularies and figures. Misunderstandings could be harmful for building relationships, especially for strangers who are not familiar with the expression of their counterparts. Overall, the conversation is easy to interrupt and relationships are hard to develop for misconception.
