Introduction:
Here in Denmark we live under a democratic regime. We get to freely express our disagreement with the decisions made by the Danish government, by for instance voting the parties out of office, or by having the chance of having a say, when decisions which will have an impact on the Danish people. If one does not agree on the road the country is walking, he or she has the chance to stand for election him-/herself, becoming a political activist, lobby the government or perhaps working for a campaigning organisation. Even though the issue is global, and has an affect of the whole population living on the earth, the efforts made by the international institutions are weak. Efforts towards solving the problem through international agreements have been restricted by different governments unwillingness to limit their own freedom of consumption. (Discussions lecture 8)
December 2009, the world leaders gathered in Copenhagen to create an agreement on how to save the climate. The expectations were high and especially a compromise between the world’s two biggest polluters; U.S.A and China.
The climate summit ended with a vague agreement, making it up to the individual and companies, instead of the governments responsibility to make an effort in saving the environment. This happened because the almost 100 world leaders could not get to an agreement on how to handle the climate problem.
