How does poetry and music explore the issues of our society? This is the question which today I will be answering by comparing and contrasting a poem and song. The poem ‘No More Boomerang’ written by Oodgeroo Noonuccal and the song ‘I Still Call Australia Home’ composed by Peter Allen, are two pieces of writing which comment specifically on Australian society and culture.
Oodgeroo Noonuccal, or also known as Kath Walker, was an Aboriginal Australian poet, political activist, artist and educator. Born 1920 on Stradbroke Island, she grew up as a member of the Noonuccal tribe. The theme for much of her poetry talks about the destructive changes forced upon the Aboriginal people by ‘white’ society and the ways which Aboriginal culture and traditions were affected because of this. One of her most famous works she created was a folksong called ‘The Dreamtime’ was written about defending the land rights of Australia and Indigenous Aboriginals. …show more content…
Until then Aboriginal Australians didn't even have the right to vote. Oodgeroo fought for equality and fair treatment. She travelled across Australia, campaigning and protesting out to people. Her campaign proved successful. In 1967 Aboriginal Australians could finally have an equal say in how the country was run. Oodgeroo Noonuccal continued to fight for her people about many other issues. She travelled the world, speaking about the crippling conditions Aborigines were living under.
‘No More Boomerang’ was thought to be written around the late 1960’s although nobody knows the exact time of publication. Around this era, there were many issues which were affecting the Australian society. It was time of evolution for Australia because of events such as immigration, industrial and political revolutions.
