(Assignment 6) Operant conditioning is a type of learning in psychology, where behavior is controlled by negative or positive punishment. Main concepts in operant conditioning are: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment.
“We learn to repeat acts that bring rewards and to avoid acts that bring unwanted results”
➢ Reinforcement is used to keep or increase its constant repetition of a wanted behavior, while punishment is used to decrease or remove an unwanted behavior.
➢ Positive involves presenting or adding a stimulus to the situation. Negative, then, means that a stimulus is removed. I have two nephews and usually every day, for an hour they have to read
or do some activities. It’s obvious that they hate this one-hour of the day and try to do everything, but to read. So, to solve this problem we decided to do a rewards and punishments.
➢ Positive reinforcement might involve rewarding them with an extra hour to play with video games, in order to motivate them to do a good job and do their reading. Extra-hour of Video Games is a stimulus that is used to increase or keep the desired behavior.
➢ If they misbehave, they might have their Video Game privileges cancelled. This is negative punishment, because we’ve removed a stimulus, which are video games in this case. In order to remove an unwanted behavior.
➢ If they continue to misbehave, parents might yell at them; this would create positive punishment. It involves using of a stimulus (yelling), in order to exclude the unwanted behavior. Which I think is not a right way.
➢ Sometimes parent might communicate with their misbehaving child by offering to decrease the tasks that they must complete in exchange for the decent behavior. This is a form of negative reinforcement, since a stimulus is removed in the service of increasing good behavior.
