Out of all of the 16 arguments, I think that the first and the eleventh are the most compelling. The reason for this is because freedom of speech is important, and giving opinions would not only be helpful to certain things, but it is only fair. Another reason is that practicality and wisdom are both very good to have, and it would come in handy when it comes to voting and things such as that.…
Christopher Columbus in a way to promote a supposed national interest, so that his “discovery”…
Many attribute Christopher Columbus with daring and ingenuity for having the initiative to sail into the unknown and discover North America. In reality, however, it was a mission doomed to failure. He ignored the (accurate) counsel of the top scientists of his day, insisting that his hypothesis that the world is round (true) was possible but if it was true then there would be an arc much larger than his calculations indicated between Europe’s west tip to the east of Asia, specifically India. Had he not stumbled upon North America, which he thought was India, (Hence Native Americans being referred to as Indians) his men would have mutinied or perished from dehydration or starvation. His folly led to an accidental discovery of a new continent, but was not based on his greatness. Rather, it was based on his ignorance and…
Christopher Columbus didn’t actually prove that the Earth itself was round. The reason is that because, the time when he traveled across the Atlantic ocean, or sailed to the ocean, there were quite few people who actually thought that it is actually possible to fall thought the edge of the Earth. The myths itself mentioned that the people said there were monsters and boiling water and it is impossible to cross over it, and yet no one did it except for Christopher Columbus. Offensive: Christopher Columbus and the rest of his crew were the reasons of the spreading of diseases, and were introduced syphilis and smallpox to most of the population that were completely devastated by them. Yet, I still thought that this day should turn into Native…

It is quite clear that Columbus is a controversial figure in American history; many different views of the “Admiral of the Ocean” are presented to the American public. For starters Columbus Day is still viewed as a national holiday; on the other side many people are strongly rooted against celebrating the landing of Columbus on the Americas. Some people argue that there is no point to the holiday because Columbus did not even land in North America; others say that he is a crucial part of American History, and of course some say he did more harm than good. Academics have many varying views on the explorer as well; for example Zinn and Morrison, both men wrote on almost exactly the same topic and the end results were two completely different views. Both Zinn and Morrison’s views on Columbus are much more different than similar resulting in two very different articles.…
Christopher Columbus was a determined individual who was passionate about finding a western route to Asia. We know that Asia was the pearl of trade and the traditional route posed a threat of piracy and other situations. Columbus had to know finding that route would make him famous and rich beyond his imagination. To make a mistake wasn't an option and he wasn't going to prepare for any mistakes. I feel he had a one track mind and wasn't open to any other options. His Repuation lied in the hands of finding that route and he was too obsesed with his future fourtune that he didn't test his theory at all. There are no reports that Columbus attempted to find similar spices that are found in India, nor did he attempt to sail full circle to prove…
“Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492...” This popular poem has become engraved in the minds of many children for years. From a young age, certain facts about the discovery of America are taught. What is not being realized is that many specifics are being omitted from lessons. This being said, it is important to note that it is no longer as simple to just explain that Christopher Columbus discovered America. Even in many history textbooks throughout modern America, some of the truths are absent. Columbus has recently become so controversial, especially at the time of his quincentennial, because of this oblivious ignorance of the facts of history. Many believe…
Free will determines what someone really wants without consequence rather then what they are forced to do. Truth is anything that can be proven, it is “the reality of the matter, as distinguished from what people wish so, believe to be so, or assert to be so” (Ruggiero, 2009). Truth is not opinion but rather facts that are waiting to be discovered. Facts may change, but the truth will always be just that, the truth. Knowledge is taught and is always evolving. Knowledge is what we are familiar with; “we can obtain authentic knowledge in any one of three ways: personal experience, observation, and report from others” (Ruggiero,2009) .Knowledge helps with understanding the topic in question and drawing educated conclusions when all the facts are not present. Opinions are subjective and “are intensely personal” (Ruggiero 2009). Opinions can be of taste or judgment but either way does not require explanation or…

After some things were uncovered about Columbus people started to question if we should celebrate him. The evidence points in the direction of changing Columbus…
Columbus had taken credit for things that he didn’t accomplish. He wasn’t the first to discover America since there were already people living there and others had known about this land. Also, there was a myth being taught at schools that had said Columbus was the one to prove the earth was round. Many educated Europeans had already believed in the world not being flat during the time of Columbus. However, those who didn’t agree with this statement mocked the ones who did. Lastly, Columbus was not the first non-American to discover the new world. “There is, indeed, considerable evidence that people from all around the world, including Europe, had visited the Americas for trade, fishing, refuge, and even settlement.” (Source: Why We Should Abolish Columbus Day by G Rebecca Dobbs) Therefore, Columbus had not truly succeeded in the things we know about him and did more negative things than positive.…
Once reading “Columbus and Western Civilization,” my view of Columbus hasn’t changed much because, honestly, growing up, I don’t remember much about Columbus and his journey. It is like I’m learning of his journey for the first time. From what I can remember, Columbus’ story was one of the first I had been educated in school. From kindergarten, all through middle school, I never understood his nature or his motives, nor did I care at the time. “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” This quotation is the only piece of info I can remember about Columbus from my previous education. As far as I am concerned, Columbus was that of a national icon. He was a Hero, master of the seas, without his bravery and determination, our universe as we know it would never have been imaginable. It is a safe bet that none of would be here today if not…
5. Evaluating Information: Based on Columbus’s letter and Boorstin’s comments on it, do you think…
Contrary to knowledge, ignorance is based on what is not, or untruths. Opinion represents all that remains, therefore opinion is both what is and what is not. The opinion represents all truths other than the eternal unchanging forms. Those who love merely sights and sounds cannot obtain knowledge, for they do not recognize the forms in the sights they see, but only the sights themselves. These lovers of sights and sounds instead have opinions.…
