Oppressed Dues In The 18th Century
Often in the past history tells of various countries and civilizations that have either clashed with each other or been oppressed by another group. Most countries have this kind of story in their history. In United States history the colonists both oppressed and were oppressed by the Native Americans. The Roman Empire oppressed many great places. They waged war across many countries. They even decided to fight far north in what is now known as modern day England. They fought the tribes that resided there, however after many months they eventually could not best them. England eventually developed into what it is today. The English aren’t innocent though. They were generally split up into four different regions, the North, South, Southwest, Southeast. The ruler of England at this time, William I, didn’t really take much interest in Wales. “He gives the border regions of Chester, Shrewsbury, and Hereford as earldoms to his feudal vassals.” ( historyworld.net ) These feudal vassals became well known for their anarchy and violence. The different regions of Wales often waged war amongst themselves. After gaining some power the leader of the south region in Wales named Rhys ap Gruffudd was eventually recognized by the English king as a feudal vassal. This marked a longer history of Welsh people rising to power then gaining recognition then falling. After several Generations of Gruffudd , Llywelyn ap Gruffudd who was acknowledged as the prince of Wales by King Henry III of England was not fond of King Henry’s successor, Edward I. Llywelyn in a attempt to be against the new king “he fails to attend the coronation in 1274, declines a summons to do homage and refuses to discharge a large debt to the English king.” (Historyworld.net) This angered King Edward and he sent his armies into Wales Through Chester, Shrewbury, and Hereford. With lack of resources Llywelyn was trapped in the mountainous region of Snowden. Facing complete defeat Llywelyn was forced to sign a treaty on November 9 at Conwy that basically stripped him of nearly all his land. This treaty didn’t last long. The English, following the treaty, were very brutal to the Welsh and this caused a uprising that was led by Llywelyn in 1282. The uprising however is destroyed quickly within the next two years and Llywelyn is killed in battle. To effect the Welsh more King Edward declares that the prince to the king with also known as the prince of wales.
