Optimism Analysis
Is the glass half empty or half full? For instance, Tammy and Sarah are at a restaurant and the waitress brings out the drinks. Both Tammy and Sarah realize the waitress only filled the drinks halfway full. Tammy is obviously upset that the cups are barely full and are not filled with enough soda. Sarah tells Tammy that she is terribly wrong and that the cups are half full and contain enough soda to finish their meals. Looking on the positive side, Sarah is showing an example of optimism. Optimists believe they are responsible for their own happiness and believe that a negative event occurs rarely. Also, anytime something bad does happen, optimists think it is not their own fault, rather than something out of their control. Furthermore, optimism …show more content…
Let's imagine that Jimmy and Rachel have a science test at school on Thursday. Rachel is stressed out because she needs at least a B+ to have an A in the class. On the other hand, Jimmy has a soccer game after school and isn't planning on studying. Jimmy thinks he will do fine on the test while Rachel stayed up studying all night. The next day, both of them took the test. Rachel ended up getting a B- and Jimmy got a perfect. Jimmy had an optimistic outlook taking the test, while Rachel was worried she wouldn't get a good enough grade. This just proves that having a positive attitude helps you reduce stress because you are not worried about what will happen. Everyday life can be much simpler if everyone is …show more content…
Imagine Becky going to a job interview at Subway. She talks negatively about Subway and how she doesn't even want to work their. The next day, Carly comes to Subway for the same job interview. She speaks very highly of Subway and explains what getting the job would mean to her. Carly gets the job because she was optimistic about the job offer. Job seekers interview more effectively, receive higher salaries, and have more career options. The reason optimistic people are so successful is because they know they will get rejected, but they know it is one step closer to a successful out come. Being positive will lower job rejection and people can start focusing on their own personal goals. Optimists don't fear rejection because optimistic people are in charge of their feelings. Being self-reliant will show interviewers that people do still speak their mind. Positive thinking helps anybody achieve more than basic

In the famous movie Remember the Titans, the captain of the T.C. Williams football team stated, "attitude reflects altitude". When your attitude is positive you can fly higher than the sky, but if your attitude is negative then you can fall deep into the ocean. It has been said that a positive attitude is the key to success in life, and I just so happen to agree. Positivity can make you more motivated. Rodolfo Costa once said; “Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible” (Goodreads). Remaining positive has always held an important role in my life. I strive to find positives in every negative situation, and remember that I can always learn something from it. Sometimes changing the way you view a situation can make all the difference. Even through times where I have had every reason to give up, I have chosen to keep a positive attitude. I have found that when I decide to do this, it makes me significantly happier, and I take much more away from the situation.…

When your negative and upset about things you tend to be unhappy. My first example In the story The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, the main character lives in a area where the dust bowl is. The family lives on a small farm and survives on the money that they get from the crops they grow and sell. The quote below will show how your attitude can be another big part of your happiness. The author says, The squatting tenant men nodded and wondered and drew figures in the dust, and yes, they knew, God knows. If the dust only wouldn't fly. If the top would only stay on the soil, it might not be so bad” (Steinbeck 3). The author is saying that the wind and the soil is so dry because of the dust bowl that it would just lay flat. This goes along with attitude because during this time they are having problems growing crops but they need to have a positive attitude to remain…

In Optimism and Physical Health, there was a study conducted to find out the relationship between optimism and physical health outcomes. According to their findings, the data suggests that optimism is a significant predictor of physical health. I would have to agree with this study and I find it validating. One thing that I found interesting in the article was the significance of pessimism and physical health. We learned from the study that optimism can have a positive effect on physical health but we also learn that pessimism can have a negative effect on physical health. According to the article Optimism and Physical health, “It may well be the case that it is the presence or absence of pessimism that is important in determining physical health outcomes rather than the presence or absence of optimism”(p.247). What this is telling me is that having the presence of pessimism can have a more negative effect on physical health rather than the positive effect optimism has on physical health. To summarize, “In general, it is clear from this review that optimism is related to physical health. It is also clear that the link between optimism and health is stronger for subjective health outcomes than for objective health outcomes” (p. 248). This study really shows this information and it can be said that for future…

Throughout life we are confronted by many difficult situations however, how we deal with these situations will either enhance or deteriorate our physical and psychological health. When someone is optimistic they expect the most positive outcome possible under all circumstances. According to University of Phoenix, Positive Psychology, (2009), “optimism is an individual disposition or trait and an explanatory style describing how people characteristically interpret the causes of bad events in their lives”. For example, if someone has a job interview, of course it is natural to be nervous. If that person stresses out about the interview and is telling him/her-self that they are going to do horrible and probably not get the job anyways, then most likely that will be the outcome. The reason being that if this is the “outlook,” they go in with, which is very negative, then their behavior will be directly impacted in a negative manner, affecting their interview, therefore resulting in a negative outcome, which would be to not get offered the job. The same can be explained the other way around. If that same person believes in him/her-self, they have a sense of confidence that they can do this and go in to the interview with a much more positive attitude, therefore resulting in the positive outlook and positive behavior in the interview, and most likely the positive outcome of the interview as well.…

When we use optimism, even the worse events seem to have an up-side. An optimistic person has the ability to take an event, for better or worse, and turn it into a blessing in disguise. Optimism is generally positive behavior. “Research shows that we use less time dwelling on negative outcomes than positive ones” (Sharot Pg 43). Optimism has been described as “mental time travel,” allowing us to plan for the future. We put more effort in the present so that our future will be bright like we imagined it. This could also be looked at as goal setting. If your goals are looked at in a negative fashion, then the outcome may be shaped in a negative way. Your attitude determines how you view a situation. When a person is depressed they have the opposite effect as optimism, they see the future as being worse than it actually is. Research shows that when a person is making a decision, no…
